Does a .app Domain Need to be a Mobile App?

I'm looking at domains for my project. The only good one available is a .app. What I am building is a web app, Not a mobile app. I want to hear some feedback from you guys if you think .app is supposed to be a mobile app?

Do you think it would confuse people when its not?

What do you think of .app domains in general? Ok to go with? My target customers aren't really going to be techy people either.

Thanks!

Nope, hosting https://pagecheck.app on there easily with no app. HSTS is forced though which is really a security feature.

Do it. I'm using .app for a few products now. It's been really easy to get the domains I want

      Thanks for the recommendation

The only requirements for .app domain are that you host it via HTTPS.

My target customers aren't really going to be techy people either.

That said, it does sound like it may confuse your target audience

Nope, it is not. https://nighteye.app/ is a browser extension with good SEO performance and growing in revenue :)

      Glad to hear it! Thanks.

Only restriction is it's https only, must have ssl.

Do you care if no one ever remembers the domain?
Do you care about the domain property resell value?

just do it and forget about it.

So you think people won't remember the domain as well because its a .app?

      1. 1

I think it's not an important factor.

My personal opinion is that it doesn't have to be a mobile app. Web apps are gaining in popularity too! But I may be biased :) I was very excited to get the .app TLD for my domain and my "app" is 100% web-based.

      Good to know! Thanks!

I don't believe required but I wouldn't do anything that isn't at least somewhat usable on mobile.

I guess maybe it could be in the future.

It is a good domain choice. https://www.turnoffthelights.app we use so our users can get the correct download file for that certain device or web browser. That can be our extension for Chrome, Firefox, Opera, Safari, Microsoft Edge, etc. Or our mobile application for Android, and iOS.
And it is all coming and linking to our official Turn Off the Lights browser extension website. https://www.turnoffthelights.com

The .app can be everything from web to mobile and even desktop applications. If you create a domain, you must create one that is unique and also easy to remember for your visitors.
