Damn, I wish I could find the link to the article but I stumbled upon an interesting AppSumo discussion the other day where people talked about their AppSumo launches.

Generally speaking a lot of users that ran subscription-based services said that it's a tough sell because the "best offer" usually is to offer lifetime access for your users which can turn into a support burden further down the line.

Another "downside" people mentioned is the fee they had to pay to launch on AppSumo.

I'm not an expert in that field, just read something about it the other day.

They take a big cut and it's not easy to make many sales, personally see it as the Groupon for SaaS, it's shit that's worth it only if you see it as an AD, just the first step to help you spread your product so you will attract many new people in the years that will come along.

From reading 500+ founder interviews, I'd say it's a mixed bag.

On one hand, you have obvious disadvantages like not making enough money, having a lot of people who may turn into a support burden along the line.

But then you have the boost in users, learning more about how they use your product, learning about use cases etc. which can open new audience ideas / acquisition channels.

I think it really depends on what stage you're at. If you already have some customers and things are getting more steady, you won't get as much value compared to someone totally new who hasn't talked to a lot of people / needs to find use cases / haven't explored acquisition channels.

for the marketplace they only take 30%. other stuff I think they take 70%

Oh interesting didn't know about marketplace thought all their deals were at the 70%.

thank you for the reply base on their audience size it's pretty fair

their audience is shit. the marketplace is almost dead, the facebook group got me almost no sales and the email newsletter got me about 10% of the total sales. they took 30% of my cut and brought less than 30% of the total customers. unless you get featured on their home page or they give you a custom deal of which they usually take 70% (which is also really really shitty) appsumo is a waste of time.

Thanks for sharing this. I was planning to prepare for an Appsumo launch! I'll read more before making my final decision.

Yes I have had a positive experience with appsumo.
And the more and more I read other IH'ers experience I think I'm the outlier.
Appsumo is great because they get your deal in front of a million people and they pay you. Yes they "take a cut" but they are generating demand. Their copywriters write an awesome sales page. They email their audience and drive sales. IF I wanted to, I don't have to do any marketing, and sales come in every day. 1 or 2 a day. Today 59.
