Does anyone use Serverless stack to build a product?
Hi! I built my Picpipe as a rails application running on DigitalOcean. I pay 20$ a month for a server that doesn’t have enough traffic to justify the expenses.
On other hand I would pay near a zero if I built it using aws lambda + dynamodb + S3.
Did anyone really tried it and as some success/fail to share?
Why not switch to a $5 digital ocean server instead of changing your whole infrastructure?
Hey @Libinpage, I've worked on about 4 serverless projects, I've had absolutely no problem. It's really great if you have a fairly simple system with few functions - where you know exactly what each function should be doing.
If you're using firebase, you have to do very little work to create your API. If you're using AWS Lambdas on the other hand, you have to do some work with the API gateway, but you could always just write CloudFormation templates (great examples on github: https://github.com/awslabs/serverless-application-model/tree/master/examples/apps)
What I love most about serverless is the scalability, ease of transfer and the simplicity in managing access to your database.

Hey, I'm using both at the moment. For my side project I'm using firebase.
The idea on firebase is to give no write access any nodes. The only entry point to writes should be the cloud functions. The functions take in an auth object that immediately fails the response if auth is invalid (unless it's a registration endpoint).
For AWS, you can set up a VPC where only your lambdas have access to your db, and said lambdas are triggered by APIs that you can set up very rigidly using swagger.
In both scenarios, your functions are isolated; but are triggered by the API; the one thing you can't escape on firebase is the difficulty in managing read access - you have to get crafty with your database rules.
The stack for https://appreviewbot.com is all serverless on AWS. Website is on S3/Cloudfront, API Gateway, Lambdas and DynamoDB power the rest, including fetching all of the app reviews.
I tried out AWS Amplify for this project and I've become a fan!
