I recently read an article called Why Writing Letters to Your Kids Is the Best Gift You Can Give Them as Adults.
My wife and I are looking to start this for both our kids, one is turning 4 in a couple of weeks and the other is turning 6. I think we can catch up.
Has anyone done this or looked into doing this?
I've built a Notion template and would love to get it out to any IH Parents for feedback.
I had this idea years ago when they were younger but never did it. I wish I had. It would be a great memory for both of you and it is something they could always go back to when you are gone, or even just when they've moved out and feel homesick.
There are so many things I'd like my kids to know that I don't always say to them: How proud I am of them for small things they do, how important some small moment or memory with them was, how they remind me of myself or my wife in certain ways, wisdom I hope to impart on them, etc.
I am very open with telling and showing them how proud of them I am and how much I love them...probably to open now that they are a bit older and want nothing to do with their corny dad. But it's the little things everyone forgets over time or that we forget to say in the moments that make these letters such a good idea. Looking back decades from now, I have no doubt my kids will know i loved them unconditionally, but they might forget how much I enjoyed a bike ride with them on some random summer day, or how proud I was of them when they used their manners without being prompted at some forgotten event with friends and family, or how much I wanted to protect them from the world cried in my arms.
I think this is a great idea and I think parents would uses something like this.
Hey Craig, I really appreciate you taking the time to share your message. I definitely go out of my way to share with our kids how much I love them and the things that make them unique. You're right, sometimes it takes written words that you want to have them read when they're older.
I know it's a little late for you, but I made a Notion template to make it easy for parents to document letters and includes prompts to help encourage parents to capture the little moments. Would you want to check it out?
Definitely. Shoot me the link.
Hey Craig, here's the Gumroad link but since you've opened up on this thread. Happy to send you the link directly, just email me at steveluu@me.com
