I'm headed out with the family tomorrow for a week long road trip. No super strict schedule, just heading south to see where we end up. I'll have my laptop and hope to work on project along the way.
Can I count that as being an honorary Digital Nomad? :-)
Why not haha? There shouldn't be a strict rule.
Maybe you can build a little project or blogging along the way?
Happy to exchange ideas @dhardenb
Definitely, you’ll be on the go, slurping coffee (I guess) and making progress. Nomad in my book.
What are you working on?
I’m working on www.SpaceFrigates.com. It is my first attempt at a real time, multiplayer browser game.
My goal for this trip is to knock out my first attempt at mobile friendly controls. So many people are mobile first now that I figure I better get on that.
Your game is pretty cool! One bit of feedback - I found the pause between holding down boost and going faster to be a little confusing. I would let go once the boost feedback stopped and only lucked into finding that it eventually comes back (and fast!).
Thanks for the feedback. I’ll need to continue to tweak the controls.
I struggle between trying to keep the game easy to pick up while having a physics based feel. Which can be harder for new players.
It's fun! Ideas:
Hi! Thanks for the feedback, super appreciated!
The debris that gets created when you blow up other ships actually does give you additional energy, depending on how much energy the destroyed ship had. However, this is SO NOT OBVIOUS. So, my bad. I need to fix that. I actually want the debris to be used for something else so need to add some sort of larger "refueling" ship you can dock with. Or something....
Totally agree with the shields and collisions. The main issue here is that I just need to implement code to handle what happens when to ships collide, in general. Right now they just blow up but need to determine damage and new heading / velocity.
Black holes are a good idea! One of the inspirations for the game is the original https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spacewar! game that did indeed feature a star in the center of screen with a gravity well that you could sling shot around.
I don't see why not! Full time digital nomading is so hard for families, even though we homeschool, routine is super important for my kids. We've just found the easiest is to stay put and look for opportunities to travel when it suits us.
We are home schooling also so our only real restriction is the amount of vacation time I have at the day job.
Which is nice because we can go at less traveled times of year. We picked this week to get some sun. We have a little celebration every time the temp goes up a few degrees! 🤩
