Does not having followers affect your rank on Product Hunt?

I have the feeling that having friends on Product Hunt or having a lot of followers on Twitter makes it automatically rank your project.

I even think it is more important than the idea itself. Because to be featured at the beginning is crucial to be visible and to rank higher.

What is your experience with this?
What to do if you don't have so many followers in Product Hunt and on Twitter?

For me, it was more important to think about the ideas and to work on them than to pass your time on social media.
