I have domain name in mind that would work really well for my business idea. All the extensions (.co, .io, .app) besides .com are available. :(
The .com address is used by a big indian company in a very different industry than the one I have in mind.
The question is now if it'd be a good or bad idea to go for one of the other extensions?
Should I instead get back to trying to find a name where I could get the .com? And could I end up in a scenario where they some how have the right to the name?
Generally if you approach anyone and ask for their domain, they will ask for a ton of money for that domain. You may need to play a bit wisely here. I am curious what is the domain and which company is owning it?
Nah - this domain is owned and used by a bigger company, there's no way they are gonna sell that to me.
But as other have said here, as they are in a very different industry it might just use same name but under different extension without causing to much confusion for people trying to find my product.
I see you are not from India - this changes a lot. Go for it. If the industry is different, they have no claim over the name.
If the company in in a similar industry I would probably think of a different name. It would be confusing and they might even sue you.
Otherwise, go for it! Worst case they will want to buy the domain from you for $$.
From an SEO standpoint it doesn't make a difference which extension you use, so you can pick any of the ones you mentioned.
You could do something like [name]app.com or go[name].com. Choose a good company name. That's what people will remember your product by. Not the extension :)
I agree most of the people will search your company name on search engine!
Thanks for all good replies!
Decided to go for the .co address. ;)
