Permítanme comenzar con una historia personal (let me start with a personal story).
Last month, I was on the go without my mobile plan (I ran out of data and minutes). I had to pay my internet bill, which I usually pay by reaching out to Xfinity servicio al cliente (their bilingual customer service). Since it was the due date, I had to connect my smartphone device to a public network to pay that bill.
Even though I was connected to a VPN, which was highly rated on the Play Store, my credit card information somehow got leaked. This experience not only made me question the safety of public network but also the reliability of top-notch VPN.
Anyway, upon some searching, I found that not all the VPNs that claim to be free are reliable. So, naturally, I went on a hunt to find out dependable free VPNs, and I found them. I tested them thoroughly to write this content piece.
Having said that, if you, too, want to avoid purchasing a VPN and still need reliability and security in your connection, read the following shortlisted options:
ProtonVPN
My Android phone, laptop, and tablet all use ProtonVPN for privacy, and rightly so.
It is arguably the best VPN for all-around usage. Whether you want to keep your data safe or just want to access the geo-restricted content, it works like a charm.
I have been using ProtonVPN since 2023, and I haven’t even thought of switching to another VPN.
¿Porque me gusta tanto? (Why do I like it so much?) Let me explain.
When I started, I used the free version for a while. The best thing about that free version is that it doesn’t have any data caps. In simple words, this means that you can just leave your VPN connection on and forget about it. The app keeps your connection private and safe from hackers, for hours.
On top of that, the VPN speeds were sufficient that I didn’t feel my devices were connected via a VPN.
That said, there are some things that I don’t like about the free version of ProtonVPN: it offers only 3-5 locations when using a free plan. Another annoying thing is that you can’t even choose the server location.
However, I have been using its paid version, which unlocks connection to more than five countries. I can choose any location I want. This comes in super handy when I have to access the geo-restricted content. For example, (No me juzgues por favor) I love Rick and Morty, and it has been taken down in my country, which is the US. But when I connect to the Germany server via ProtonVPN, I can still access it.
So, it is helpful. If you can afford the paid version, you will be satisfied and have access to tons of other features.
On to the next best now!
Hotspot Shield
Hotspot Shield is another top player when we talk about free VPNs.
The features offered by Hotspot Shield are great and useful, and like ProtonVPN, it doesn’t impose any data caps, so you can leave it connected all the time.
As for the server locations, it offers only four options, which, luckily and unlike ProtonVPN, you can choose. On the flip side, it doesn’t offer many great features with its paid plan, so I never got it, and you should avoid it, too.
Another way for you to avoid HotSpot Shield is its data collection. Though they have disclosed that they collect some data to improve your experience, puede que no sea cómodo para la mayoría de las personas preocupadas por la privacidad (it might not be comfortable for most privacy-conscious people).
To bypass this, you can always try to use their guest mode to connect. It doesn’t require any sign-in details, so they don’t have any point collecting your data since you are a guest.
It is one of the oldest and most renowned VPNs, and it is a better option for a free VPN.
PrivadoVPN
If you need a VPN primarily for accessing content that is geo-restricted, Privado is your best bet.
It is one of the better choices for multiple reasons, and let me tell you about them all.
First things first, it offers server locations in 11 different countries, which you can choose even in the free version. On top of that, it follows the modern standards of encryption to keep your data safe, and your connection private. It offers no log policy, so you can access the VPN without even signing in.
It is not all great, and nothing bad – there are some things that you need to consider.
The free version offers limited data, which is 10 GB per month. I have used it and ran out of data within the first week. So, you need a paid plan for unlimited usage. Also, if you’d be using it on the Chrome browser on your laptop, then don’t install it because you can’t. It doesn’t offer any Chrome extension as of now.
If you’d ask me for a VPN sensata para tu Android (no-nonsense VPN for your Android), I can easily recommend ProtonVPN because of its unlimited data and top-notch privacy features.
