Don't let unusd assets drain your AWS budget. I explain how my SaaS helps entrepreneurs

I've been bootstrapping (solo) my first SaaS product for several months. It's called unusd.cloud, and it is starting to get traction recently with some new customers (MRR) and 60+ free subscribers.

Are you tired of mistakenly leaving cloud assets active at night, during the weekend, or even worse, forever? This not only generates unwanted costs on your bills, but it also unnecessarily extends your attack surface and impacts your carbon footprint.

unusd.cloud is here to help. We scan all of your AWS accounts across all regions to identify and report on any costly assets that have been mistakenly left active. Our scheduled digest report provides actionable cost-saving solutions for you and your team.

At the beginning, this was a side project for me during my AWS experimentation, to ensure that I’m not leaving unnecessary assets at night, after some tests or preparation for my AWS Certification, then I created a more robust version with more features for some customer project, deployed on each individual account. Now its a product (SaaS), with more features, more detection, and cross-regions, and I’ll add detection for IAM principals soon (reduce attack surface)

At an early stage, I focused on B2C, a lot of DevOps folks registered to scan their own account, as I offer a free plan for a single account, but I’m now challenged (like many entrepreneurs) on conversion.

Now I’m thinking that B2B is the only path forward, and I should simplify the subscription path by integrating directly into AWS Marketplace to be billed on the global AWS bill of the customer without using another payment method.

I would like to have your feedback on my approach and recommendations.

How Does unusd.cloud Work?

Our service automatically detects and identifies unused resources in your cloud infrastructure. With our daily notifications, you can take immediate action to shut down or modify resources that are no longer needed. By doing so, you can:

  1. Save Money: Unused assets can quickly add up, but with our help, you can stay on top of costs and avoid unnecessary expenses.
  2. Reduce Attack Surface: By minimizing the number of active resources, you reduce the likelihood of a cyberattack and keep your organization secure.
  3. Lower Carbon Footprint: Unused resources consume energy, but with unusd.cloud, you can contribute to a more sustainable environment by optimizing your cloud usage.

Thanks folks!

very nice idea, a couple of thoughts:

    • if there is a setting to schedule turning off assets, like overnight between 12 AM to 8 AM
    • pricing seems a bit steep, from 0 to $299 is a bit of a jump, maybe if you can add a mid-tier plan for up to 5 accounts and limit the number of resources that would attract more startups
    • having GCP and azure would be great

    Best of luck

Hey Ahmed, thanks for your proposal.

You are right, the support of multi-could is on the roadmap, but at this time, I spend my efforts on AWS.

Regarding the scheduled shutdown, I'm not going this way as I want to keep permission to read only on customers AWS Accounts. I will suggest but never apply remediations.

For the pricing model, we can always discuss if your use-case if for 5 AWS Accounts, drop me an email ;)

Great idea! How do you plan on expanding and marketing? And also, are you sure in your pricing? $299 for startups seems a lot. You can try to test different pricing options, to get the right one. Good luck!

My product is a good fit for B2B, SMB or Startups, if they are using approximately 10 AWS Accounts, the number of present workloads and potential savings will be substantial. The ROI of such a product is then acceptable. It's even true if the customer is experimenting a lot on AWS, or running workshops and training - fast moving environment will see huge benefits of this "garbage collector" for AWS Assets.
