A couple of days ago I got a fun, little idea for a open-source project:
DontLeaveMe 😭
Yep, that's the name of it. I obviously spent tons of time on it ;)
The idea 💡
Keeping users on your website is tough. At one moment they're on your landing page, and the next second they open a new tab on Youtube, Facebook, Instagram, etc..
You don't want that.
With DontLeaveMe, you can solve this problem by adding one line of code to your website. It's simple to setup and fun to play around with!

And yes, this is some sort of a “joke post” 😉 . I will be launching it, but don’t take this thing to seriously. I was just learning how to build a simple NPM package and release it to the public.
I must strongly disagree with the other poster. You don't need to have an entire plan of attack to build something fun like this. In fact, attempting to do so is often counter-productive.
You may not find a viable business model by hypothesizing with hypotheticals. However, releasing now allows you the opportunity to ask your potential users: "What other features can I provide for you?". They may show you a path forward that you had not previously considered.
For example, consider one of my recent releases. During the height of the $GME craze, I built and released a silly extension that removed the "Sell $GME" button in Robinhood's web application. There was no long term plan for the project, but by releasing early I gained valuable insight into what sort of things the demographic concerned valued in a browser extension focused on investors and popular securities.
I agree with you. Although I don't agree with using this product (I view it as a sort of dark pattern), building is how you come upon good ideas. It's not very often you can snatch an idea out of thin air and execute to success. Building is the best way to learn and validate. Building is what gets those muscles strong.
I call this approach as "follow the guidelines unless you have a reason to break it". If you don't know the reason why you are going against it, you might get somewhere but it's purely based on luck. And hope isn't a strategy.
Silly extension with $GME just earned you a spot on the talking table with others. So deliberately doing it to open the conversation to make a certain audience talk was smart but if it wasn't planned, then it was just luck.
So yeah listen to others, more to yourself, know why you are doing what you are doing & the way you are doing and then go. Or just go and see where that gets you. There is no single way.

Great tool.
And there are are many way to use it (for ppl that don't think it's interesting) :
If you have a ecom website, you can use such trick, when a user goes to an other tab, something like "get -20%. code : FT456".
If you are building a mailing list, you can make other kind of snippets, and ask for email to have access to all snippets

I ended up deleting the landing page and just redirecting to the Github repo because it got no traffic at all. I thought it wouldn't have done anything on PH and that was years ago when it took way less votes to get into the best products.

Its funny but I don't see why anyone would use this considering the impression it leaves upon the user.
Cool of you to build something. But remember you need to be solving problems. Keeping users around & come back with such tactics won't do much in actual gains. Solve real/hard problems, those are the ones that will have the potential to make money.

Cool, learning is always good. But I would say move on to the next actual thing before considering launching on ProductHunt, cuz even if it gets attention, how are you exactly utilising it? Right? Like more followers or collecting email subscribers? If nothing, then go build the next thing :)

Yeah “Show IH” posts can be strange. Others get tons of comments, but when people actually have something ready built, no one sees it 🤷♂️.

Btw, Don't Leave Me is an interesting and creative idea. I starred and forked on GH. This post has also well performed than most products that get submitted in this group.

Actually it is not on you. At least I’m not sure.
After scrolling through the recent Show IH posts, you can tell that only about one every day or so gets a decent amount of upvotes (mine for example). The others don’t.
That means there are so many other great products launching out there that don’t get to see the light :(

Yep, that’s what I’m doing. I’m mainly building GlowAndGrow (feel free to check the product on my profile) and i made this to hopefully get followers so when I launch glow and grow, more will see it.
