DuckDuckGo acquired what I built! 🎉 🦆

Going into the weekend, I thought this would bring some inspiration to those in the community... I started a small side project with a friend back in 2020, which later turned into a full-time job for me, and shortly after it was acquired! It's now been made public that it was acquired DuckDuckGo! 🎉

A few years ago, I was posting tips about how I was growing on Twitter, about how we got the #1 Product Hunt Product of The Day, networking with a lot of you in the community, giving feedback on what you were building, etc. all while my startup Removaly continued to get traction.

Everyone here has been instrumental in my journey and has shown me such great support along the way! Thanks to each and every one of you! 💪

There's so many learnings and insights I'd like to share, so expect more content coming soon! But if there's anything specific you're curious about, drop in a comment below and I'll add it to my list of things to cover! 😊

This was posted on my Twitter account, but sharing it here as well:

That's awesome! Congrats! Were most of your customers consumers? Was all of the marketing via Twitter?

    1. 2

Thanks! We were pretty much exclusively to consumers (B2C) with some exceptions there as we were in the process of launching a B2B offering. The marketing was actually mainly done through content on our blog and Reddit.

CONGRATULATIONS!! , What does this do exactly?

    1. 1

It was software that found and removed people's personal information from the internet. It's now "Personal Information Removal" in DuckDuckGo's new bundle: https://spreadprivacy.com/meetprivacypro/

congrats! any idea whats next for you? :)

    1. 1

Thanks! I'm not sure yet... currently deciding between about a dozen different things I might want to do 😅

  4. 2

    Congratulations!
Are you a millionaire now? :)

Hahah I should have said deal price is one things I can't say. Anything else you're curious about though I'm game.

    Congratulations, Kyle!

    1. How did you go about validating if people were ready to pay for Removaly's services?
    2. Was it a one time fee or a subscription product?

      Thanks! To answer your questions:

      1. We just launched it, stayed scrappy, and reached out to whoever we could to try it out (reddit comments, blog articles, etc). The niche itself was actually quite validated as there were several competitors in the space already, we just found a slightly unique angle.

      2. It was a subscription product, similar to what they have now, though it's bundled with a few other products: https://spreadprivacy.com/meetprivacypro/

    Inspirational! Congrats, Kyle!

Congrats Kyle! Are you joining DuckDuckGo to help with the transition?

    1. 1

Thanks! And good question Doug. For some initial context, the acquisition happened at the end of 2022 (though it was just announced this month). My co-founder and I joined DuckDuckGo post-acquisition to help with the transition and I got a chance to lead the team building their "Personal Information Removal" offering. I left to pursue other things after a year and my co-founder stayed 👍

Congrats, so will you become a startUp coach now?

    1. 1

Thanks Chris! And HA, I wasn't planning on it as I tend to rag on startup coaches (who generally don't have any experience building themselves). I'm always happy though to help out founders when I can and I answer pretty much every DM I get on Twitter if anyone ever wants to reach out for help 👍

wow nice, whats your twitter handle, so I can follow you

    Congrats, thats a big achievement!

    Congratulations! :)

Thanks @abh1sek, keep building yourself! 🙌

    🔥 Congrats!
What about the numbers? How many users and revenues did the Removaly have at the time of acquisition? Or is it about the technology? Why did DuckDuckGo buy your product? 😊

    1. 1

Thanks Julia! Currently not sharing numbers, though we did share some along the way if you want to dig through my Twitter account. To give context to your last question though, it was complimentary to what they were building (a privacy subscription bundle that just launched) and aligned with their values/mission 👍

    That’s awesome. Big congrats 👏

    1. 1

      Ayy thanks Avery! 🙌

  13. 1

Huh, why would you be prohibited from sharing the news initially?

    Congrats either way!

    1. 1

Fair question. They wanted to relaunch it within their subscription bundle (just launched -- announcement here) so it was in their best interest to keep things on the "down low" until the bundle was released to the market.

Congratulations! Regardless of the financial reward, this kind of thing is really satisfying on a whole different level. You deserve it!

I appreciate the support David! 👍
