Intercom for Early Stage Program

Intercom for Early Stage Program

Hey everyone. I was wondering who uses Intercom/has enrolled to the Intercom for Early Stage Program? I am working on a project now and have created a landing page to drive sign ups for our beta program.

Would love to get peoples experiences and opinions!

I enrolled a year ago but the price is crazy for early startups after 1 year. As a consequence, I switched to Crisp since they offered a great lifetime discount as an early startup.

    1. 1

yes I think I will also switch to Crisp

    2. 1

What discount does Crisp offer for early stage startups ? I can't see it on their website !

      1. 1

They don't, but pricing is 10x cheaper than Intercom when you scale, because it's flat. Intercom charge you by users, so as long as you add more inactive users, you pay more.

Thanks for the advice on Crisp I will look them up

Yeah, as others have already commented, Intercom doesn't understand that many SaaS startups need to be freemium and when they charge based on active users, after one year on the Early Stage Program, we are less than thrilled with their email:

"Congratulations, you've graduated out of our Early Stage program" - and will go from $49/month to... "based on your current subscription plan, your Mar 05 invoice is estimated to be $1716/month."

So, this is way beyond impossible for us. Wouldn't it be magnanimous if YC shared with founders that they push to Intercom that they will have this shocker to contend with in one quick year? Or, does YC think it's reasonable to expect us all to go unicorn or die within 12 months...?

To those who are on early-stage program - how many active users could you use within the $49 plan? I have been told we can only get 500 active users ( which seems quite less when you consider these are site users and not necessarily customers).

Hey so my team actually did use it for some time but unfortunately, it didn't allow us to do everything we wanted!

We've now moved away to Kustomer 🚀I think this post my colleague wrote on our reasons why will be of interest to you 👉https://bit.ly/2FxXL4c

No worries ! Let me know what you think :)

If you are really early stage, I wouldn't add Intercom or any similar service. That kind of money if better allocated to real sales. What's the estimated LTV of your customers vs how many leads do expect to convert using Intercom. Is that worth the $50/month?

In my case 80% of the chats are support chats, and I also use it for customer retention (emailing).

Good point! Something to think about 🤔

I just started using Intercom via the Early Stage Program and I'm loving it compared to Drift. It is so powerful yet simple.

    1. 1

What makes it better than Drift?

      1. 1

It has FAR more flexibility, especially with bots. Intercom also has omnichannel messaging (email and chat in the same interface). Not to mention the extremely rich integration ecosystem.

We have! They essentially have a flat rate of $50 per month for a year. We are a SaaS product (MFY) so having a direct line to customers was important. And we needed to send out email campaigns too. We also use their Articles feature to host getting started articles and general customer knowledge base. And since we were bootstrapped chose to go with Intercom. I am not sure we are still utilizing it to the full potential yet. Do you have any specific questions wrt how we use it?

    1. 1

Thanks for the good feedback Arun! A few questions:

      • Do you use Intercom for email campaigns over something like MailChimp?
      • Do you think Intercom is worth it once your year plan is up?
      • What apps do you use with Intercom? I noticed integrations with Slack, Salesforce, Google Analytics, etc

MFY looks cool! How long have you been working on it?

      1. 2
        1. Yes we use it for email campaigns in lieu of MailChimp. If ConvertKit had a free tier, we would have probably used that though.

        2. It's way too overpriced for a bootstrapped company like ours!

        3. We send custom data from our backend to Intercom via API . The only integration we use is Calendly to help schedule demos from the chat widget itself

Thank you! Been working on MFY for a year. Close to a product hunt launch now :)

Yes we are also in the $50 flat early stage plan, and I have a SaaS with thousands of free users. So if you have a freemium model or a low ARPU, Intercom is not an option in the long term, but meanwhile we are enjoying the flat rate. Be prepare to migrate everything, my suggestion is don't use anything like Articles which is hard to migrate.

Thanks for the advice on the articles! Where would you suggest hosting blogs/articles?

        1. 1

No idea xD I have my own blog in wordpress, that should work.
