Early home / landing page feedback

Hi folks,

Page: https://screenbud.com/landing/for-everyone

I am interested in your feedback on my home page. I say home page, because it's not really targeted at a specific audience like a landing page typically would and because it's what users will see when they go to https://screenbud.com when they are not signed in.

Context

ScreenBud allows you to capture, annotate and share your screen easily. It's an extension, but you can also capture a public page by providing a URL.

  • You can annotate your screen with arrows, text, highlights, etc.
  • You instantly have a link to send to someone over email or chat.
  • You can leave comments on specific parts of the page / image / video and other can reply (ala Docs).

Disclaimer: Some of these features are still work in progress :)

I have built the landing page myself, it's using a mix of tailwindcss and manual css. It's in Svelte, but that does not really matter is it does not have many reactive components now.

I am definitely planning to hire a designer and/or marketer to improve the home / landing page, so this is not a final version by far, but it's the perfect time to get early feedback!

Ideas / thoughts

Let me know what you think!

  • I want to make it much clearer what the product is, to that end, I am thinking of creating an animation and / or a video.
    • Any other ideas to improve the clarity?
    • Do you think animation, that's simplified and maybe less overwhelming is better than a video?
    • Or perhaps both make sense?
  • Should I include pricing at the bottom or only direct people to the free version? Based on guidance online, landing page should have a single call to action -- having pricing could be overwhelming, but then again, it's more of a home page, so I am not sure the same advice applies here.
  • Should I include "who is this for" section, something like this: https://screenbud.com/shot/cbfb3c70-7dbe-4b20-bd35-1ac19301c77b
  • Should I perhaps have a questionnaire, after basic introduction, asking "who you are", that will then automatically populate rest of page? I have heard that this can actually increase conversions, because then there "investment" (in terms of time) from the visitor, also the content would be personalized to your needs. This could address the 2 points above:
    • We could show the recommended plan for the kind of customer you are.
    • We would show the landing page for the kind of customer you and the kind of benefits you can expect.

Seems like a really helpful idea! I think the simple browser extension to sharing method element is the big selling point. That's what makes this better than screenshotting, marking something up in Preview, and having to send an email.

I think you can make better use of the header. Right now it's all text. A hero graphic might help. And just more comfortable spacing overall. Feel free to take up most of the page with that header.

Overall, I think the page needs more margin. It all feels pretty cramped on the sides. More whitespace up top and between elements would help.

I don't love the two columns of text. It makes the visual weight a little hard to follow and know what i should read next. I'd pair each one with an image and simplify.

For the example image, I think the concept is great. Really straightforward to show what annotation is. And I generally think that the simplicity is good, but I think you can afford to actually show an example of a real annotation to make it feel more real. What is the annotator saying about that graph, for example?

On pricing, I think simplify. I'm guessing a freemium model is going to make sense here if you're offering an unlimited free trial. So, I'd suggest focusing more on telling people they can start for free with no credit card. Also, some typos in Enterprise. Entreprise -> Enterprise. Sing-on -> Sign-on. Although honestly, I'd just cut that option entirely. 3 options is a much more reasonable number and if you get to the point where people need those enterprise features, they'll let you know.

"ScreenBud is a beta stage software — anything can happen" reaaaally stopped me in my tracks. Marking it as a beta I think is a perfectly good idea and lets me know not to worry about small bugs. "Anything can happen" sounds terrifying.

    Keep up the good work!

Thank you Ben for the very detailed feedback, really appreciate it. I am currently in the process of finding a designer to help me out with improving the home page, so your feedback came at a great time. I am planning to include more visuals (including some animations) to help explain the product.

I don't love the two columns of text.

That's a good point and the solution you describe is super common (e.g. trello here https://screenbud.com/shot/2c9ce22f-094c-4d7d-9172-5f2c3d2a908d).

Show an example of a real annotation

Good point -- I was going for simple example for 2 reasons: (1) Make sure that different audiences can relate; (2) Make sure people are not distracted by unnecessary stuff. But it's a tradeoff indeed.

      On pricing

I'm planning to move the pricing to a dedicated page to make the home page more focused on getting the users to sign up as you suggest as well. WDYT?

ScreenBud is a beta stage software

True, did not think of that. I have changed that as well as addressed some of the typos you mentioned.

That makes sense on the real annotation. I was on the fence about it, so leaving it vague definitely makes sense too. In future, once you've got target audiences locked down, you could customize landing pages to the particular market and then leave this one generic and get best of both worlds!

I'm all for moving the pricing page, given that there's a free tier. All they need to do is literally sign up and create an account and pricing only comes in once they like it. I say go for it!
