Educational requirements are killing hiring practices

What does everyone think about post-secondary education becoming less and less important when hiring?

Some of the best qualified people that I have interviewed in my career have not necessarily had any sort of post-secondary education. And some of those who did, their papers weren't at all relevant to the position being applied for.

I'm a great example of that. My undergrad degree is in Journalism. My first jobs in management and business were prior to me completing my MBA.

I didn't get the jobs because of my education.

Some positions clearly need that training. Doctors, lawyers, engineers, technicians, and more, have specialized training and education.

You're going to want those people to have done their schooling. But for the rest of us, the reality is, we use soft skills that in many cases are learned over time.

Not in the textbook or classroom.

I just recently hired a new manager that only has high school. But their experience is such that they far out-qualify any new BA or MBA grad.

We have gone too far to the school side. We see this now in trades. White collar jobs have been touted by guidance counsellors for decades now.

I just feel like we run a real risk of missing out on an amazing hire by focusing too much on education.

Agree?

I also did a twitter thread on this here if you wanted to continue the conversation there or if you agree and wanted to retweet.

I'm a hiring manager in the tech industry. I've interviewed hundreds of candidates and hired 50-ish over the past few years and have never once looked at education. It's not required to do a good job in my industry or in my roles, so I don't narrow down the field based on education.

Love this. Glad to hear it happens. Not that I think education is bad, or necessarily a waste, just that I feel it's been given too much weight over the years. Thanks for sharing your story!

Hello people! I know that if you're reading this, you probably don't want to write an essay, maybe you're lazy, or you just can't write it well. The best service to write my essay for me is https://essaywriter.miami/ . I was surprised at how fast they got their work done! Writing an essay is a difficult and tedious task, but these guys can do it for you cheaply and qualitatively. I know how hard it is to write essays myself, so I recommend it to you, I use this service myself. Good luck!
