EffiMail: How we built an open-source email productivity suite to 500K users

https://effimail.io/

After 18 months of development, our AI-powered email tool suite has hit 500K+ active users and optimized 2M+ emails. Here's our journey building EffiMail as an open-source business.

What we built:

AI Email Writer with context-aware generation

12+ specialized tools (Gmail generators, spam checkers, open/click trackers)

Chrome extension with 5-star rating

Complete Next.js 15 starter template for other builders

Key decisions that worked:

Open source from day one - MIT license built trust and attracted contributors

Privacy-first approach - Everything runs client-side, no data collection

Chrome extension first - Better distribution than competing with Gmail directly

Multilingual by design - 60% of users are non-English speakers

Tech stack:

Next.js 15 with TypeScript

Tailwind CSS + shadcn/ui

Zustand for state management

next-intl for i18n

Numbers:

500K+ Chrome extension users

2M+ emails optimized

4+ hours saved per user per week

Bootstrapped (no VC funding)

Business model:

Open core approach - free tools with premium templates, white-label licensing, and consulting services.

For fellow builders:

The entire codebase is available as a starter template. Perfect if you're building email tools or want to see multilingual Next.js 15 implementation.

We're still iterating on the open-source business model, but user growth validates the approach. AMA about technical implementation or business strategy!

Love the concept behind EffiMail! The value prop and clarity are rock solid. Just a thought — with some subtle UX tweaks and visual hierarchy improvements, your already powerful tool could feel even more premium and frictionless. Would love to share a quick redesign concept if you’re open to it. Cheers and congrats on the traction!

Hi, you mentioned 500K+ Chrome extension users. When I went to your Chrome Web Store page, it says number of users (Weekly active) as 30. I don't get it!
