Email automation? Fav tool and why?
by
Janice
What do you use for email funnels?
Hey Harlem, guessing you're asking for your course.
Email automation is kind of a vague term. MailChimp does some automation of email sending, for example.
And there are tools that are great at automating email sequences for sales. Things like Woodpecker.co and Lemlist.com - but I don't think you're really talking about them :)
In my mind, once you remove ecommerce-first and more expensive, enterprisey solutions from the table, you're basically left with a choice of two decent options...
Drip is more powerful. It has a lot of great functionality for more complex segmentation and sequences that ConvertKit doesn't have (yet).
For me, the big advantage of Drip over ConvertKit is the way they handle events. With ConvertKit, you'll find yourself setting up a lot of 1-email sequences to handle situations like a subscribers clicking on a specific link in an email, for example.
That said, there are advantages to ConvertKit too.
The team is moving fast and very, very responsive. Which is great at a time when Drip has pretty much widely been acknowledged to have dropped the ball. They took a real deliverability hit and did some really shady pricing increase stuff.
That's why I moved over to ConvertKit a few months ago, as did some really experienced email senders like @brennandunn and, IIRC, @alexhillman.
What would I recommend?
If you're doing ecommerce stuff, Drip (or maybe Klaviyo) is the way I'd go.
For other use cases, I'd recommend ConvertKit. Especially long term.
Either way though, you'll be fine whichever option you choose. After all, it's what you write that counts ;)
My strong recommendation is for CK, echoing lots of what @louisswiss said.
I also always ask the question: what exactly are you automating, and is it ready to be automated?
I see a lot of email setups that are written with automation in mind, and as a result, they end up feeling automated...and as a result it feels more like a reader is being fed down a cattle chute of emails rather than getting emails that actually make sense at the right time.
Instead - I recommend "flintstoning" your email sequences at least once and looking for ways to improve them, and running them again, all before loading them into automatic sequences where they'll just go until you tell them to stop.
This is similar to, and for similar reasons to, the advice that you might hear from experienced course developers, and I saw @brennandunn strongly recommending during his recent AMA: there's a ton of value in doing things "live" for your audience before you automate.
I personally treat the "automate" step as an entirely separate piece of our email process where I give emails the special treatment needed to ensure that they still read well no matter what day/month/season they are sent, but they still feel natural and organic like they were just written today.
I know that's not exactly the question that you asked, but I didn't have a lot more to add to Louis's recommendation except to agree :)
Excellent point. (Smiling) And one with which I happen to agree and practice!
Given that I'm reaching out to a new audience, I likely could benefit from another round. But I'm not sure I'd survive another 324 "hand-crafted" emails. I have got to get on the automation train!
What kind of emails are you looking to automate?
Sign up for free masterclass (3 part video series) --->>> Purchase of course (8 emails total).
Is that masterclass already built? How many folks are signed up for that?
Scripts are written. Shoot is this Tuesday. I plan to advertise to my list (18.5K) and Facebook Ads end of month. Sneak peek is here.
Fair warning. The site is a hot mess at the moment.
Wow. Thank you for the incredibly detailed response! This is fab!
Quick follow up... what do you miss most in your transition from Drip to ConvertKit? And what was a surprising perk?
Nothing, Drip was a trash fire that regularly didn't even deliver emails it sent.
Very happy switcher.
Wow. Officially side-stepping a potential hot mess.

"Email automation is a wide term and a lot of software tools offer a different degree of email automation. As a marketer and business owner, I have used a good deal of email automation software. Right from Mailchimp to some other email blasting tools, I have worked with a variety of them.
However, my recent experience with cold emails is quite amazing. In my endeavour to increase future business for my agency, cold email outreach has worked wonders for me as far as prospecting is concerned. I started with lemlist but since their pricing is a bit too high, I did a lot of research and found Smartreach.io, and trust me, ever since my experience has been over the top. Great email deliverability rates. It offers pretty much everything at 50% to 90% of the cost as compared to other tools in this segment.
I recommend this tool to everyone! GL"
From my personal experience I can say email automation can really increase your overall marketing performance in many ways: segment the contact base; send personalized and relevant offers; reach contacts at the right time, when they’re most likely to become customers; track customers’ behavior; evaluate at what stage of the customer lifecycle a user is, and generate sales-ready leads etc.
As for my favorite ESP systems, I would like to mention eSputnik and MailChimp. The first one offers a lot of similar features and can be really useful for online stores (product revommendations, segmentation by events, triggered messages etc).
As for MailChimp, I like its easy to use drag and drop email builder and nice analytics.
