Engaging with existing users
Retaining users is always cheaper than gaining new ones, so, how do you approach engaging with existing users? Do you do email/push notifications? Do you use an app like Beamer? Would love to hear more about your solutions and struggles in this area.
I think one of the best ways to engage your existing users is to ask them for their feedback.
Make a list of all their suggestions [1] and then go ahead and implement them. Be careful though, don't blindly implement every suggestion - some may actually harm your product!

How do you engage with them? Via email? Or in-app?
Usually through email, Twitter or Reddit :)
I don't use Beamer, but I've been tempted of the Push notifications on the Pro plan ($99/mo). I've received notifications from youtube when I wasn't even on youtube, and as a windows 10 notification,..very nice way to draw attention to your app.
I think something like auto-message emails or inapp messages based on triggers (eg. hasn't logged in since.., uploaded xx images, visited app xxx, achieved xyz, etc) is a basic must to keep users engaged.
Do you have this sort of pipeline setup for your own projects? How were the results?
My customers rarely respond to my auto-messages, but I get around 33% - 55% read rate, which I think is not bad.
Sometimes customers ask me things or even thank me.
I see it as a way to break the ice, start the conversation, and have them speak about their problems. Usually it's support I end up giving, which I think keeps them on board.
