I'm excited to finally share EPUB Reader Pro with the Indie Hackers community.
I built it after noticing that most online EPUB readers either require uploading your books to a server, force you to install an app, or are cluttered with unnecessary features.
So I decided to build something different.
EPUB Reader Pro is a free browser-based EPUB reader that focuses on privacy, speed, and simplicity.

Building this project taught me a lot about browser file APIs, performance optimization, and creating a smooth reading experience without relying on a backend for user files.
I'm still actively improving it, and I have plenty of features planned, including better annotations, enhanced accessibility, and more customization options.

What stood out to me is that the real differentiator here isn’t EPUB support—it’s removing the trust barrier. Most reading tools quietly assume users are okay uploading personal libraries to a server, but for books, that assumption feels much heavier than in other file types. If EPUB Reader Pro consistently wins on “nothing leaves my device,” that’s a stronger positioning than feature depth alone.
Exactly. EPUB support is just the expected functionality—privacy is the real value proposition.
Most readers don't think about where their files go until they realize their personal library has been uploaded to a third-party server. At that point, trust becomes a deciding factor. By keeping all processing on the user's device, EPUB Reader Pro removes that concern entirely. There's no account required, no cloud upload, and no unnecessary data collection.
That creates a much stronger positioning than simply saying "we support EPUB." Features can be copied, but earning user trust through a privacy-first approach is far more difficult to replicate. It's a message that resonates not only with privacy-conscious users but also with students, professionals, and anyone who wants complete control over their digital library.
