What do you think are the key skills indie hackers should master to maximize their chances of success?
As solo-entrepreneurs, we have to do almost everything in the beginning, so it's probably a good idea to get a decent understanding of all the key skills.
Here is my list. Please let me know if I am missing anything or you disagree.
Lean Startup - understanding MVP and the importance of pivoting to customer feedback
Copywriting - convincing people to buy from you
Content Marketing - getting attention cost effectively
SEO - Getting found in search
Paid Advertising - driving traffic cost-effectively
Analytics - knowing where your customers are coming from and what they are doing on your site
Networking - connecting with people to improve your future opportunities
Sales - the ability to generate business for your company, attract employees, motivate workers, etc.
Is there anything you'd add or subtract there?
@IdeaEconomy A biggie that you're forgetting is luck, which doesn't matter if all of the other ducks aren't in a row, but success, in societal terms, depends on it. It isn't sexy, because it isn't quantifiable and won't help sell any motivational material, but that doesn't make it any less true.
Luck plays a massive role in what succeeds and what fails.
Yes, I agree that luck is very important to startup success. However, it's not a skill you can learn. I'm just focusing on skills.
What are the key skills you could learn that would most help your startups chances of success?
The ability to fail, learn from it and to be thick-skinned enough to (probably) fail many times over - so, resiliency.
Developing a high emotional intelligence is keen as well.
Realizing that the genius is not in the idea, but the execution of the idea. So, the ability to kill your darlings.
