Hi,
This is not political, no discussion about the benefits or not of Brexit please.
We're UK based and are looking to launch (mainly Europe and GB customers) in the next few months and are wondering if anyone has already made a decision on whether to launch as an EU company or a UK based SaaS.
My gut feel is EU due to less VAT registration required but I'm wondering if anyone has made a decision either way and regrets it, and why. Currently we're registered in the UK but would look at registering in an EU country if it's "better".
Have you thought of setting up in Northern Ireland? It's in the single EU market, and part of the UK (at least at this moment).
Why is there less VAT registration? As another commenter pointed out, Paddle can handle sales tax. Stripe also has a new solution that apparently makes it much easier, though it doesn't fully take care of it.
Many European countries are highly bureaucratic, whilst in the UK things are quite easy in comparison. There might also be complications if you live in one place and have the business in another. Loads of small businesses and startups do this though e.g. mainly live in Europe, incorporate in US, Singapore etc.
We’re based in the UK and are happy with it. I hear a lot of the European legislation can be quite beaurocratic and convoluted (not that we don’t have nonsense too, but maybe it’s a bit more business friendly)
Something you might find interesting is companies like Paddle (or in our case Shopify) where they go down as the merchant of record, meaning they’re responsible for the VAT for digital goods. (Please don’t take my word for this, but it does seem like it’s the case)
Live in UK, business is registered in the UK. Don't be obsessed with looking for a lower TAX burden, because in the countries with lower taxes you pay an alternative cost in physical office / legal / changing regulations.
I could have registered a remote company on some island but then I'd have to hire a lawyer not to face a random $100k fine for something I didn't find on the web.
