Before starting my my project, I reminded myself about the last failure.
Yes I failed just like everyone. It was few years back when I was working on a business idea which could save the world . Really!
I started to work on an app that would let women give the opportunity to order a dress which is based on their own size without any extra ordinary cost. Sounds Cool ! It was an amazing idea for me too.
Let the story begins!
As someone from Pakistan living in London, it’s always been very interesting to see how others manage both cultures. Specially for girls/women fashion and clothing styles. Normally everyone learn their own way by having normal trousers/shirts and for special occasions, traditional Pakistani clothes shalwar qameez etc. I work as a supplier for the women who wants Pakistani stitched clothes. I buy them from Pakistan whenever I visit and then sell them in UK. It is very small business to please close friends and family and few outsiders. I sell online only.
During this process, I always had complaints of the right size of dresses. That gave me idea to develop an app where women gave their measurements and the selected dress will be send to them accordingly. It is just like tailor made clothes, I would be the provider only.
At that time I was doing a course of UX design where our task was to start with an idea and end with the product prototype. That involved initial user research. I used different methods of research. I asked women in family, asked friends, asked people in trains, on platform(there is an interesting story about it, I asked a lady that I needed some help and she straightaway said no, then I realise how badly I asked like I needed money/shelter. Even though I tried to clear it that it was related to my course researched, but beginning was horrible). Same time I was working on my project too which was ended before my research finished.
The most important thing which I realised that everyone, literally 100% women had the size issues, but no body wants to solve this problem. I had to dig down why it was so. Researched again using my online prototype and as the result it became clear that women had issues but they managed to solve it by returning the products very easily. Women looked at the return policy while buying the clothes so in case it won’t fit properly, they could return it. The other thing is they wanted to use the app for special occasion like for their wedding, for prom etc. Otherwise everyone is happy what they get.
Until I reached the results, my course was finished and so my project. I didn’t continue building the product. But it was really good lesson learned.
Even if there is a problem, check is it really a problem ?
Had very similar idea once..
But there is one thing in this world of start ups - sometimes people are also not ready for the solution to some problems. That's why a lot of great ideas are not very famous, they just didn't found the fit for the market yet.
About my idea:
Website where you can make customised clothes for yourself. For example some people love to be unique and not every human (specially women) like to have clothes that everyone has. You can chose color, material, type (dress, t-shirt etc) and size of course. Someone sew this for you and ship the item to you... but I think its too high cost.
@kelyst yes, you are right that sometimes making people are not ready for the idea.
The idea you had is wonderful but are women interested to pay for that high price? When I talked to women, they were reluctant to have customised clothes for everyday occasion because by hearing the word 'customised/sized' they instantly thought that it will be expensive.
Great share! The way I would put it is - we know there's a problem, but are people willing to spend time/money on a solution? I think there are MANY problems out there that people complain about all day, but they have no real interest in developing solutions.
Yes, it is very interesting to see how people act differently from what they are saying. In above case 100% of interviewees said they had problem but when it comes to solve it, they don't bother.
The book "The Mom Test" addresses this pretty well!
The summary is something like: When validating your idea, DO NOT talk about your idea, but ask your target market what their problems are. And if the conversation naturally comes to your idea, ask them "What have you done in the past to try to solve it?" If the answer is "Nothing, I just live with it" (vs "I've searched and searched for solutions!"), it's likely not worth solving.
Andrew,
I'm working on a side project called Bookibly, I got the domain name from @CraigBarber 's newsletter (by the way Craig did you send out one this week?)
It's a website where we post book reviews by real people and the takeaways.
I've seen this Mom Test book mentioned a couple of time and I would love to add it to the website.
I just need like a 2 min recording of you explaining what the book is about and when one should read it. Can I ping you?
No way! haha
Sorry, I hate recording audio and hearing my voice. It's a really popular book, so I'm sure you can find someone to do it much better justice than me :)
lol
fair enough, but I was just going to use the audio to transcribe it.
Ah haha! Might want to lead with that :) Feel free to ping me, although I'd probably still want to write it out.
The book isn't fresh in my mind, so this looks like a pretty good summary:

Here were my main takeaway before looking at that:
i love hearing the
originstories of how things came to be... even if they don't actually end up "working" the way that you want!we learn more about ourselves through the process... and the moment we stop, we're dead.
Thanks for sharing this great insight @fnosheen. It is always a good reminder to conduct customer interviews to see whether the problem you are trying to solve, is really a problem at all. Thanks for the reminder :)
