Everyone talks about the importance of goals. Few tell you how to set great goals.

Here's how to do it. In 5 steps (and 15 minutes):

  1. Take 15 minutes
  2. Ask yourself "what would my goals be if I couldn't fail?"
  3. Brain-dump your ideas
  4. Pick the top 5
  5. Re-write them using the MSTW (Measurable Specific Time-Bound) model
  6. Reverse engineer those goals. Break them down into actionable steps you need to take on a monthly, weekly, and daily basis. Research what you don’t know. Use a hunch where you can. But make sure the steps are achievable with your current schedule (I.e., don’t put “read 50 pages a day” if you barely have time to read 10… or opt for the audiobook instead).
