Find people talking about their problems on the internet, in this case Squarespace forums.
This still happens. I stumbled upon this example from @wardmemberspace and @mijustin
"All I knew was that 100,000 people were interested in a membership solution for Squarespace."
Yea it's amazing how frequently people will talk about their problems on places like forums. I was also surprised by how much detail they will go into about issues with current solutions. Forums are a great watering hole when doing initial product research and discovery 👍
IIRC, The founders of Zapier did something similar, too. They looked in the support forums for various products, and they saw people asking for integrations, e.g. "Hey Asana Team, it'd be great if you integrated with Gmail." So they know there was demand, and then they built the product to satisfy that demand. The bonus was they also knew exactly where to find their early adopter customers: in those support forums.
