Excel/Google sheet users, what do you use to visualize your data?

Do you use the built in chart stuff in that software, or something else, if so, what? And, whatever you use, are you happy with it?

    PowerBI is amazing.

@Breffni thanks for the input! By the way, love the every-mon idea and the lessons learnt on your page. Super insightful.

So, with PowerBI, you regular use it? Have you always liked it, even at the beginning? Thanks!

@thatandyrose Your welcome, Tried to be fairly broad with it.

PowerBI is a bit of a head screw to learn but it is a very effective tool for presenting and processing lots of data especially for decision-makers in a business.

Hi @breffni sorry for tardy answer... day job 😬🔫... I just had a follow up question. When you loading data up in PowerBI... what kind of data is it? And, where does it come from? Excel sheets, a PG db or something? In terms of the kind of data, I mean.. are they events, what usually the x-axis, like, other data or just dates for example?

          thanks again :-)

I sometimes go to tools like https://infogram.com and https://www.datawrapper.de . They're pretty cool, though sometimes it consumes more time than wanted. I've tried to build a few things to improve this but left along the way. What do you have in mind?

hey @Hermann thanks for the feedback.

I'm working on something which is about creating configurable/time aware charts for time series data specifically... so, like, making it super super simple.

But back to you... what kind of data are yon trying to visualize usually, and you say those tools are cool. Anything you don't like about them?

In terms of building something yourself... what let you there? And what stopped you from carrying on?

Sounds interesting @thatandyrose . What I've been trying to do is to be able to tell a story between data and its context. And nothing seem to be colliding those two elements (data and context) for the everyday use. I built a tool to tell stories on spreadsheets (mustly.io) but put it on hold to focus on another current project.

Hey @hermann, wow I have so many questions 🙂.

          1. When you say "nothing seems to be colliding those two elements for everyday use" what do you mean?

          2. Why did you put mustly on hold? You seem to have done quite a lot of work in it?

          3. Where did you get the video done for it?

          4. What are you working on?

Love the idea of mustly by the way since the long term goal I have for all my projects is for making data easier to understand. So right there with you. 👍

            Hey @thatandyrose,

            1. I mean that sharing/explaining data happens on special types of events (presentations, infographics, etc) and is not well embedded in everyday tasks like text-messaging or audio-messaging.

            2. I was working on two side-projects and had to focus on just one. Mustly.io seemed like a more technically thing to properly solve so I'm still hopeful on gathering more tools to tackle this later on.

            3. I did animations with a design agency from ukraine called netrixdigital.com and video footage and audio with some guys from mexico. I can send you all contacts if you want.

            4. I'm currently a few weeks away from launching (beta) a platform to build and automate workflows for freelancers. requirements recollections, proposals, dashboards, etc.

I'm glad to meet someone after this goal, I think it's very relevant, specially on this remote economy. Let me know if i can be of any help. 👍

hi @Hermann, thanks by the way for this. Been busy with day job 😬🔫 but will keep you updated. How's your launch going?

Oh, you know what.. I did have a question. When you're analysing data etc... what kind of data are you usually trying to extract answers from? 🤔

Most of the businesses(especially traditional ones) use Excel to visualize as their data is already in it. Yeah, Excel is infamous for ugly charts but with a few tricks you can also make nice looking visuals in Excel as well.

Thanks @anakravitz, and you like those solutions? Particularly when looking at time series data?

thanks @anakravitz. And what kind of data are you usually looking at? Like, for example, is the x-axis usually time, dates etc, or not really that type of data?

I ask because, when it is time data, what do you do to aggregate the dates in such a way that you can inspect the time data in a different way, such as by day, month, week, year etc?
