I use Trello for most things, mostly a big list of all the things that need doing. I have too many boards, tbh! I connect/link them up to google docs/spreadsheets where relevant.
More recently I've started using Notion to take note of all the important things for me. I think Notion will replace much of my Trello stuff longer term.
These are all free, and very flexible. Not sure any one tool would help me manage a business, but would love to see what other people use.
Notion is great. It replaced Trello, Notes, Calendar reminders and more, for me.
Fully agree! Still not perfect on mobile and lacks some features like multi account but it is a great tool, I'm using it for like 6 months now.
I have started using Github for project management and I must say that I am amazed. Even though the wording is focused at coding, you can handle any project roadmap through issues, milestones, etc. It's free for open source projects, it's free for small (I believe up to 5) private groups of people. Mozilla has some information on how to use it properly.
Hi Paul! Could you say a bit more about the scope and intent of your planning? I collect all kinds of guides and frameworks and would be happy to share what I like and/or use. For instance, are you project/task planning, content planning, or trying to plan out a whole business incl. financial plans? IMHO those are all different challenges. :-)
I often find it difficult to follow one guru's process to the letter, as every project is a bit different. Right now I'm doing a blend of Strategyzer and MIT Disciplined Entrepreneurship for a value prop update and change of distribution channel.
I recently started using freedcamp.com (free tool) and i like it better than Trello. you may want to check this out.

BizPlan strikes me as an opinionated tool that says, "I have beliefs about what makes a good business, fill this in according to my rules." Are you looking for something like? Or a more generic tool like what you'd find in a Trello or a Notion?
Yeah, it seems opinionated, but I kinda like that because they cherry-picked good verticals and data plotters. Trello or Notion are somewhat basic.
You might want to look at a tool like Javelin (www.javelin.com) or Glidr (www.glidr.io). These tools avoid the heavy-handed, outdated nature of a full business plan, and instead focus on the lean methods to validate your business, structured in the form of a business model canvas. I've used Glidr in the past, it's fine.
