I found small.chat recently and have been quite impressed! For getting started quickly it has the least setup steps and integrated so easily into Slack.

Has anyone tried using chat tools to engage with readers of a blog? Not with the goal of converting leads, support or anything specifically business related, but just to discuss the topic of the blog / answer questions?
We get questions via live chat related to certain blog posts from time to time, but we do not encourage readers to ask them - but that may be a good idea to try it.
Would you set up an auto message on a specific blog post page to start conversations with readers? Or who do you imagine proactively engaging them to discuss blog posts with you?
I'd imagine just having an auto message saying "chat with the author" or something, and then maybe a line at the beginning of the blog making readers aware that they can chat w the author if he's available, think of the auto message like a gchat / slack status
I have heard both opinions: some bloggers are keen on chatting with their users but for others, the volume of conversation soon become unmanageable. Do you think a conversation via chat will be a value add from the blogger's perspective? I sure can understand how it's valuable for readers.
My blog doesn't generate a ton of traffic so the conversation volume should be manageable. What percent of readers do you think will chat with the author (assuming it's a small niche blog by a random person)?
The benefit for me as a blogger would be to learn more about my audience. There's no online community for my niche and people are generally not super outgoing (biology PhDs)
I am a little biased since we are building a FB Messenger tool for bloggers but you could try adding the FB chat widget to your blog and see how many/quality of interactions via chat on your blog.
One thing I have noticed for a previous website project of ours was that if you have a relevant welcome question (the message that pops up for visitors which is usually a question), the chat volume/interactions goes up. With FB you can take up the chat at any time via your FB page for your blog.
If you don't prefer FB, then perhaps Crisp.chat is a good choice.
freshchat.com is also very nice with a 10 seats freemium :)
Yes, Crisp, free tier, I kinda like it but it’s difficult to get customers to use it for pre-sales questions only and not use it as a support channel.
Why so?
It’s a lot easier to schedule support if it all comes in via the same channel (support form).
ChipBot could be a good solution to try for this. We have a few customers who use it on the product side to automate support and collect new questions.
