FB ads (beginner/amateur/pro?)

Hello hackers!

I've got a new project on, and I'm going to be delving into Paid Social...!

For context, I've done this in the past. I've ran 2 ads, both unsuccessful: one using FB boosted posts (I had even LESS of an idea what I was doing then) and once, using business manager and a fresh ad account (but I acknowledge I was probably using it very poorly as a total novice).

At that time though, FBs automated ads weren't a thing. So. I'm wondering:

  • What's your approach to Paid Social?
  • Where have you had successes and failures?

Let's chat!

I’ve been working with Facebook ads for the past 4-5 years pretty heavily with budgets ranging from $500 to $2m per month, and at times have had a direct account manager at FB helping, flying in for coaching, etc.

A good recipe for success is data, data, and more data.

Setup your conversion event and run ads to that landing page. Keep the audience wide open and bids wide open. Facebook will do its best to target who it thinks will convert, based on past conversion data.

You’ll likely burn through your first $500 with little to no results with this model but it just goes up from there. Especially when you start building lookalike audiences off of who has converted.

Creative is also very important, and differs on what works from business to business. The key here is to just test as much as possible and see what sticks. Don’t get too crazy on storytelling, clear and concise is key.

      @codypotapoff nailed it.

      clear & concise wins.

Here's a good article to bring that idea home...

Good creative can compensate for the lack of platform expertise because the FB algo is pretty solid. Obviously "good creative" is relative to the eye of the beholder, but assuming you can get that far with your audience targeting you should be gucci.

      Thanks! That's helpful.

I hadn't thought about just leaving the audience wide open like that.
Does that mean you're not spending much time in audience insights, trying to find good targets?

Keeps me focussed on sticking with business manager, and not taking the easy way out with automated ads :)
