Hi guys
I'm the creator of https://online-solitaire.com/, a site where 20.000+ people play 100.000+ games of solitaire each day. If you're interested in how I ended up creating a solitaire website, I've done an interview with IH before: https://www.indiehackers.com/interview/how-i-keep-my-side-project-manageable-and-profitable-eb5544135c.
I've been putting some work into SEO for the last six months or so and it seems like it's finally starting to pay off. The ranking of the site is still not great, but it's better than before and it's going in the right direction.
I have a hard time retaining these new users coming in from Google though. I have a downloadable app and I'm asking people whether they want to bookmark the site after they played some games. I'm not sure how well it's working though and I think I need some fresh eyes on the problem, so I was hoping to get some feedback from the community.
How would you improve retention on Online Solitaire? Do you have any other feedback or ideas for improvements?
U make 10K MRR from this? Damn congrats!
My ideas:
I got some extra ideas around content, but that's for another time!
I sure do. I can't even imagine what the people who rank at page 1 on Google for the term "solitaire" earns!
Thanks for the suggestions.
I'm not sure why I'd want people to sign up though? The only reason I could think off would be that I'd want to create some sort of newsletter and I have a hard time seeing how people would be interested in that?!
I guess that gift vouchers would add some sort of gamification element. Have you seen that somewhere else since you're suggesting it?
I like the idea of making donations as well. I'm not sure how that would help retain people better.
What kind of gamification elements would you add?
By gathering their emails you'd have one more channel to use to bring them back
Yeah on YouTube videos
When people play to do good, they're gonna play more - i.e. play for fake coins, exchange coins for donation, donation coins make a leaderboard of who donated the most.
I think you should do some research on gamificiations yourself and decide what works best for your site! If it was my site that's what I would do.
Hi @holgersindbaek, I love your story behind Online Solitaire.
Would love to get in touch with you on a possible collab?
Cheers!

Your site is offering online play and a downloadable version - that's a bit confusing at first glance. Do you show ads on the downloadable version? - if you don't you are just cannibalizing your own site in a permanent way that then delivers zero revenue.
Your site says it's ad-free but there are ads showing next to the online version.
I think your website needs work, I wouldn't bother with the big comparison matrix you have for you and other competitors, it's eating up space, people want to go from getting on your site to playing as fast as possible. For a free product you don't have to do the comparo for your users, they can do that themselves, but they probably won't, they just want a nice-looking version of the game they know already how to play. I would move all the rules off of the page and onto a separate link, maybe embed the how-to-play video in place of the text and put the text elsewhere. I would do a separate page for each game and keep the rules for each on their own page if needed.
Your site needs an independent copywriter makeover, more modern graphics as well. I would investigate getting a website agency to build you one from the ground up and SEO it for you. I would also work like crazy to get as many links back to the site as possible. look at the link profiles of your competitors to get started.
Your site is really too busy so maybe do this - have a main page with a screenshot link to each game that shows an image of the game, the name, and "play free now" then have a page for each online game, have a link from that page to instructions, with a video - one big button that says instructions, another that says bookmark, and a third that says download.
That's it, no overthinking, get the player directly to the benefit, assume most know how to play or will figure it out.
Try to get the online graphics of your game looking as modern as possible, it looks a bit dated, the other graphics on the page only make it more so. I am not throwing rocks here you have a great business that makes big money, spend one month's worth of it to give it a sleek website and a fresh new look.
Thanks for the feedback. I think the design of the site is sleek. I’m which way do you think it could be improved and feel more up to date?
