Feedback on page to help indie hackers get started?

I've been working on a new page targeted specifically at brand new indie hackers who are trying to figure out what this is all about and get started.

It's also a celebration of people getting started in 2020. I want it to be inspirational, not just informative. You can find the page here:

Let me know your thoughts!

  • Does it work on your browser?
  • Does it make sense?
  • Did it convince you to take action?
  • What can be improved? Added? Removed?

In particular, I'm still on the hunt for new articles to link to for each section.

Thanks!

EDIT Jan 13 @ 230a PST: I updated the page to take a lot of your feedback into account! Still lots of improvement to go.

It looks pretty, works on my browser, and it is nice to see that you can do so much in the community.

But, I feel like while it is showing the actions that are possible it is not connecting with the pains (that will result in me doing the actions). Perhaps adding phrases like 'building a side project does not have to be lonely' and 'get essential feedback on your idea' might help.

    1. 2

Thanks for the feedback! I like the idea to make the copy more directly address various pain points. The page is intended for who haven't started yet rather than experienced IHers, so I suspect their pain points are more around "what do I even do" rather than "I'm doing X and it's hard," but there's also bound to be a lot of overlap for sure.

      1. 2

@csallen - yes, focusing on those that are seeing IH for the first time is a great idea.

  2. 3

After scrolling for a second all I get is "it's a new decade" on infini scroll without any content
    Android Chrome

    1. 1

Me too, I'm using Firefox 72.0.1

    2. 1

It's like totally broken past page load
I can see partial renders before load finishes

      1. 1

Whoops, I broke it for Firefox last night. Pushing a fix.

  3. 3

It's not working for me (Safari on a Mac), I see only part of the page. It works fine with Firefox though.

    1. 2

Indeed, it looks pretty weird on Safari! Thanks for the heads up, I'll investigate.

  4. 2

    Love the initiative (and design).

A few short thoughts (happy to expand on any that catch you're interest)...

    • I think some of the steps are in the wrong order 😇
    • I wonder if it wouldn't be more effective as an email sequence (spread out over days/weeks) instead of a page. It's a lot of information to take in at once, and probably not something where you'll think about all of the steps at the same time. Would be useful to have in the inbox to browse later (especially the resources)
    1. 3

How would you order the steps?

Good idea re:mailing list. It would be nice to get a lot of this in a drip campaign.

      1. 2

+1 for the mailing list idea. It feels like a lot to take in.

      2. 1

How would you order the steps?

        Probably...

Looks fantastic. Ive been listening to the podcast for over two years ish but have only lately been actually visiting the site and reading/engaging with posts. So I feel like I'm definitely going to use the links on the start page. Particularly building in public

  6. 1

In particular, I'm still on the hunt for new articles to link to for each section.

Are you doing this manually? When I was looking at the page I was thinking that was a clever way of automation using existing content for a landing page.

If you are doing this manually I think I could help with a formula to get a "living" page going for the landing page or at least give some tips in the direction I think we would be cool.

    1. 1

I'm referring to manually finding articles for each of the "recommended reading" sections.

We're also finding user posts manually, but we have a community manager for that :-)

  7. 1

    Hi.

    • If your aim is to get sign-ups the message gets drowned. Just too much info / too busy.
    • "615" is not convincing number.
    • To de-clutter could celebrate randomly selected person with a More.. button. Same for other aspects.
  8. 1

    not working on my mac(chrome)

  9. 1
    • Does it work on your browser?

      • On Mobile Firefox, and it was really slow and then when to a blank screen
    • Does it make sense?

      • No, this information should either be directly on the main site before users sign up. AND also Just In Time in the places where it needs to be, like suggestions on the home screen. No one is going to want to read through docs to understand how to use this site.
    • Did it convince you to take action?

      • No.
    • What can be improved? Added? Removed?

      • Remove, and put the content in the places where it is needed. I.e. put it directly next to the functionality to explain what it does, rather than a single monolith. People do not have the ability nor attention span to read ALL of the indie hackers ideology before trying to use the site.
    1. 1

No one is going to want to read through docs to understand how to use this site.

So when you see the page, it appears to you as intending to be documentation for how to use IH the website?

(The actual intention is to be a resource for people who are getting started building an online business, some sort of plan or cheat sheet they can use to (a) learn, and (b) refer back to whenever necessary.)

Anything I could do to make it more obvious that the latter is the intended purpose of the page rather than the former? Perhaps the "recommended reading" lists should have more prominence. 🤔

      1. 1

Sitting in a spot where you need to educate your users isn't a good thing, everything for them should be immediately intuitive on the next action they want to take. If that isn't then a display in the moment in the best thing. Make sure to get stats on how many click and on the "recommending reading" and then actually read it, because I'm pretty sure it is going to be low (and even lower since once they see the information they'll likely only skim it or immediately leave).

The question that we need to be asking is "why is it not immediately obvious what users can do here?" Is it because they signed up already thinking it was one thing when it was another? You really need to talk to users that turned aware and ask them way, if clarity of purpose is what was missing for them, I don't think adding some "reading" is going to help.

"What were they trying to do when they decided to drop from the site", that's the question you need to answer.

  10. 1

Chrome Mobile seems to have some issues.

At first, it starts loading correctly but when it finishes loading, the page drops off and is replaced with only the navbar and CTA button. If you scroll down, those two elements keep repeating infinitely.

I really love the idea of the page though!

  11. 1

Doesn't work, I see a tableview with the header of the pages repeated. Indie hackers, community search bar etc. Actual page is empty.

Uncaught (in promise) RangeError: Incorrect locale information provided

  12. 1

Ok, so I'm really brand new to the site/idea (found it 5 minutes ago), and after browsing your start page, I would like to say just one thing:

    "Still lost."

Sorry if that is not what you wanna hear, but I'm new to the whole concept, so I do think that, albeit your start page is a progress, it still has a lot to cover.

Maybe something like a "start here guide", where you cover what needs to be "done" in a more thorough way, possibly even linking to external resources about entrepreneurship and other relevant topics.

I'm open to discuss this further to help grow the community....

    1. 1

Thanks for the feedback! You're exactly who I want to talk to. Ideally this page itself will (eventually) successful serve as a "start here" guide.

Can you describe what it means to you to be an "indie hacker"?

Also, what do you feel most unsure about when it comes to getting started?

Did you see the links to resources on each section of the Start page, or did they not stand out enough? If you saw them, did they feel helpful?

      1. 1

Well, for me an IH is someone that strives "alone", without the corps breathing down on your neck. And by "alone" I mean it could be a group/partnership of another IH(s), but always without big corp involvement.
For me they come when we are satisfied with our MVP and it is time to showcase it. :)

I saw the resources later, took me a while to understand that those things were actually for me to click on it.

The way I saw it, I considered those testimonials or similar....

Probably a directly link to the group itself would be helpful, but I still think a "starter/noob" page would be great.
Probably something like the Odin Project FAQ?

        1. 1

What questions have you had about indie hacking that you would've liked to see answered on a FAQ page?

  13. 1

I like it, nice overview of the site.

Works on firefox, opera and chrome on linux.

  14. 1

Hey Courtland, I think it's a great idea. To me, the page is like a 'Start here' guide for new IHs.

    My thoughts on the page:

    • It looks great on Chrome (Windows). I love the UX and overall layout.
    • Try the following to target your headline to a use-case: "Learn how to start your profitable side project with 574 Indie Hackers"
    • I'm hesitant to click "Get started" because I think it's going to take me to a sign-up form. But, I'm not ready to sign up so early in my journey. Instead, could you use some other UX tactic to make it more obvious that you want me to simply scroll down?
    • The secondary CTA "or read some stories to learn more" doesn't work for me. That's what I initially thought, anyway. Is it possible to make it more obvious that the red, blue, and yellow squares are clickable links to articles?
    • Instead of "Recommended Reading," could you call that section "Recommended Resources" to include links to IH and non-IH podcasts?
    • Not sure if this was intended but the "Set Goal" CTA and the "or read more goals" secondary CTA both link to the same page. I believe that happens with the other sections as well.
    • I don't feel strongly about this but I would consider a new order: 1) Brainstorm an idea; 2) Find a partner; 3) Commit to a goal; 4) Create your MVP; 5) Find your first customers; 6) Build in public
    • When I click on 'build in public' CTA, I couldn't make the connection between that CTA and being asked to add my product on the next screen. Instead, I would suggest linking to https://www.indiehackers.com/products.

Hope that's helpful! Let me know if I can clarify anything.

    1. 1

To me, the page is like a 'Start here' guide for new IHs.

      That's exactly it!

Try the following to target your headline to a use-case: "Learn how to start your profitable side project with 574 Indie Hackers"

Yeah the headline is tricky. I want to entice people who want to start a profitable side project while simultaneously celebrating that 578 people have gotten started so far in 2020.
(It's actually a live counter that will update as you watch the page.) Perhaps I just need to split it up into separate sentences. 🤔

Not sure if this was intended but the "Set Goal" CTA and the "or read more goals" secondary CTA both link to the same page. I believe that happens with the other sections as well.

Yeah they're basically the same thing, since the page to make posts and read posts are one in the same. I probably should just get rid of the secondary CTA, or add some extra functionality for the primary CTA, e.g. focus the "new post" box.

I don't feel strongly about this but I would consider a new order: 1) Brainstorm an idea; 2) Find a partner; 3) Commit to a goal; 4) Create your MVP; 5) Find your first customers; 6) Build in public

I feel pretty strongly that goals should come first! :-D Will be writing an article on this shortly.

When I click on 'build in public' CTA, I couldn't make the connection between that CTA and being asked to add my product on the next screen. Instead, I would suggest linking to https://www.indiehackers.com/products.

      Good point.

      Thanks for the great feedback!

Cool page. How does it fit into Indie Hacker onboarding? Is it the the new default page for someone not logged in? Knowing the level of prior knowledge the user has is pretty important in giving advice.

For example, if I didn't know anything about Indie Hackers and this page was the first thing I saw I might assume it was some kind of challenge people were taking.

I might also assume the stages were part of some “official thing”. And you had to partner up, you had to commit to a goal ... (A bit like YC Startup School). Although on closer inspection it's obvious this isn't the case I wonder if some people will be a little confused?

Having said that I do like the stages.

    Some more points:

    • Get started button scrolling down is odd. I assumed it would direct to sign up
    • Makes sense to have some kind of, “sign up” section at the end. Where you push people to make an account.
    • Font size of posts looks a little big
    • Currently the title is a bit verbose. Could it be sharper? One curveball idea would be to emulate the Hustle's old style and go with a dictionary definition approach: Indie Hacker. Noun. Singular. Anyone who sets out to make money independently online ...

    1. 1

It's kind of a challenge-type thing. Maybe an event is a better way to describe it. It's pre-signup onboarding, meaning that ideally it'll be a page that many find before they signup.

Agree with all the feedback points, thanks Harry!

  16. 1

I am not sure what's the purpose of the page, it looks more like I have to make some decisions instead of to discover what the site is about.

    • The or read some stories to learn more link is a bit confusing, I expect it to be a link and lead me to somewhere, but it just refreshes some images on the right (which don't look clickable at first sight).
    • The page (list below the fold) does not have a title. What is that list of things? Is it something I have to do? Is it some way of creating a business? Is it the list of topics discussed on IH?
    • Get started is a bad name for a button, especially judging by what it does now. I would use something more descriptive like Learn how to start a business!, if it just scrolls down to the unnamed list.
    • BUG: Clicking on 1. Commit to a goal scrolls the page to that section, but the indicator is now at 2. Find a partner

I like the overall look and feeling, but for me it's a confusing page, I have no idea what it's actually about and what I can/have to do on it.

    1. 1

Thanks for the feedback, lots of fixes in the works!

  17. 1

Works and looks great on macOS Firefox.

It makes sense but it might be a bit overwellming at first sight for newcomers mayber?

The sections look a bit repetitive. Maybe adding a unique banner image to each would make it easier to stand out.

Also, adding one link to a podcast episode per section could be appealing, since the content on the podcast is so good and 1on1-ish. Heck, you could maybe add a 'Recommended hearing' beneath 'Recommended reading'.

Finally, maybe at the end a nice call to action/motivation/hype thing would be cool.

PS: loved the sticky nav list on the side.

    1. 1

Thanks for the feedback! Will consider all of it. Really like the idea of a hype section at the bottom in particular.

  18. 1

Love it. Could you share the technology behind it ? How did you make it ? Thanks a lot.

    1. 2

Nothing special, it's just HTML and CSS connected to our Firebase database, and JavaScript/CSS for various effects. Anything in particular on the page that you're curious about?

      1. 1

Thanks ! Basically I'm new here and looking to learn how to code websites (designed for businesses) for my projects. However I would like to learn without getting on a proprietary platforms such as Wix and such.

  19. 1

I really like it, but how new users are going to find it? It's going to be in the home? It's going to auto redirect for new users? Other?

    1. 1

It'll be linked to from a few places, including the homepage. For now the only link is in the "welcome to IH post" that new users are redirected to after signup.

  20. 1

I think this is a great idea. Sort of "meta" building a landing page for landing page builders...

Does it work on your browser? - Yes, Chrome Beta, 64 Bit, Peppermint/Ubuntu
Does it make sense? - Sort of, see below.
Did it convince you to take action? Yes, because I know what IH is already but I don't have time to click through and read the linked articles.
What can be improved? Added? Removed?

It says "Join 544 indie hackers starting profitable side projects in 2020.". I almost wonder if it needs something like "IndieHackers is a community of like-minded startup founders" or something of that nature? From a purely logical standpoint, the original statement about joining 544 indie hackers could apply to a startup accelerator, a hack-a-thon, a MOOC, etc.

You could also add "there's no financial cost to join our community, we just ask that you engage, help out, and be respectful" or something like that. These days everyone's waiting for "the other shoe to drop" and expecting a deluge of spam when they give their email out.

    1. 1

Good feedback, might make sense to add an explanation of what it means to be an indie hacker somewhere below the header and above the main body content. 🤔

    2. 1

I wonder if it's worth adding "there's a meta section where you can ask questions and get help". If this is a starting point for new users then pointing them to help resources right out of the gate might be appreciated.

  21. 1

Does it work on your browser? -- YES
Does it make sense? -- Everything but the get started button - not sure what the point of that is?
Did it convince you to take action? -- No, but it would have been helpful ( I think ) when I first joined .
What can be improved? Added? Removed? -- Make the call to action at the top more clear. The Get Started links or or read some stories to learn more are confusing. Seems like this is just a "Scroll for options to engage the community" today.

    1. 1

Yep, it's basically just "scroll and click links." Perhaps the "Get Started" button should redirect to creating an account. That ultimately takes you through a short wizard that culminates in setting a goal, which is step 1, so it makes sense. Thanks for the feedback!

Ah, guess the copy is confusing. That's 560 people who've started something new since January 1st, 2020. That doesn't include people who joined before then, or people who joined afterwards but haven't started anything. Thanks for the feedback!
