(Sorry for double posting, figured this group was a better place for this)
I've been toying with an idea for a web app / social platform for movie & tv viewers. Think Letterboxd mixed with Reddit.
In an effort to be lean with development I made a mock landing page so I could get feedback before I even start coding.
I would love any feedback on both the idea and the landing page!

This is just a mobile mock for now. If responses are positive enough I would mock out a desktop view, get more feedback & iterate the design, and then actually build the landing page to capture emails and presell pro memberships. Only if enough people signed up / pro memberships sold would I actually work on building an MVP.
Is this a good way to go about things? This is my first real side project so just want to make sure I'm on the right track with my approach. Thanks!
I love the animation you're using in this.
I used to religiously track my TV shows and movies, and am always looking for new recommendations from friends / family, so I get what you're going for here. Two pieces of feedback / food for thought
Also, something I'd caution against is waiting for paid memberships before building MVP - you should get to MVP as quickly as you can. If you want to move forward, build the landing page and see if people are interested in signing up. You'll get a much stronger indication if real people sign up for the waiting list - plus you'll start building a list of people who can help you test and learn.
Don't be afraid to do scrappy things to get to MVP, even if it's as simple as asking people that are interested to join a slack community to simulate what the experience would be like.
Oh, both of these posts are exactly the kind of feedback I was hoping to get so thank you!
Sharing would definitely be an opt-in experience (or at least allow for a way to opt-out for specific things like you said). We all have our guilty pleasures and it's nice to not worry about stuff like that getting shared haha
I would love to either integrate with services to auto-track whats been watched but from my research, most if not all of then have closed APIs. I have ideas on other things I can do to sort of automate tracking for users but none of which would I be able to have for an MVP.
Speaking of MVP, yes, I would def not have a required number of paid memberships before I built an MVP, more so getting enough would be validation enough to invest more time/energy into the project. For better or worse, this is a project that my livelihood doesn't depend on and instead is more solving a need I've found I had (and imagine others have as well), so I think MovieOtter would exist in some form regardless of user signups but that would instead dictate the scope and roadmap for things I'd like to build if that makes any sense?
I loved all your feedback! Would you be ok if I reach out and PM you as things progress? Would love to sort of user tests things with you since you sort of sound like someone in my target audience haha
No problem! If sharing is optional I'd just make that a bit clearer - it was definitely something that concerned me as I was reading it.
& yeah, not surprising that most of the services have closed APIs. Automating tracking is def not something you'd need right away but it's good you're thinking about that for the future.
Sure - feel free to reach out! I def am in the target audience. Case in point - I have a groupchat with 4 of my friends to discuss a TV show we're all watching, but we're all at different points in the show. If some of us have watched what others haven't seen, we have to be super careful about what we say (or we just go into another group chat). On the flip side, someone will bring something up that I watched a few months ago and I'll be like who is that again? What happened?? OOOH yeah I hate her too!!
As a word of caution my day job is validating / developing ideas and products, so I tend to be overly critical about things as a force of habit lol
Hi There.
I really like your landing page! Good job, is simple and easy to understand, which lots of landing pages missing.
Good job, good luck.

Awesome, thanks
I’ve seen variations of this idea a bunch of times over the years. The only one that stuck for me was https://justwatch.com because it solved a real immediate need (quickly finding something good across the specific tv services I subscribe too). Might be good to think about what your one killer feature is that sets it apart. None of those listed features really stand out to me as new or compelling (admittedly might not be the target audience though).
Yeah for sure. I don’t know if I have 1 killer feature and instead just trying to offer a different alternative for people. Would like to build more based on user requests. Appreciate the feedback though! I have stuff to think about for sure
Is "sharing" your number one feature? That's what you focus on, but I'm getting the vibe from the rest that the real focus is more about finding what to watch next, no?
Maybe it's just because I'm pretty analytical by nature, but instead of generic marketing type illustrations, I'd prefer to see parts of the UI so I understand better what this can do for me. A picture worth 1000 words and all… I just don't understand how your app syncs what I'm watching, if it's al automatic or requires some manual data entry, etc.
I would also try to find some opportunities to tighten the copy if possible. Some of it feels a bit like "I have to make the text longer there because that's what the design calls for". For example, the paragraph under "see what your friends think, not critics" feels like it doesn't really add much to what that sentence already described.
All in all, it seems like a potentially useful and fun service, but it's just too vague for me to want to try it.
The overall design is clean and simple tho! Good job 😎👍
Oh man, after rereading this I think I misunderstood your first point ha 😅
"Sharing" is what I believe leads to better "finding". At least that's my working premise with the project.
I personally find less value in what critics and media think of shows and movies compared to my friends who either A) know my taste from experience or B) just have a similar taste because of our personalities. I'm willing to bet that that's the case for a lot of people. So recommending something to a friend would lead to better viewing choices than just going by what "the world" (traditional reviews on platforms) or "the elite" (a handful of stranger individuals) suggest you watch.
This obviously wouldn't be the case for everyone. Some people find themselves in-line with things like RottenTomatoes and that's more than OK. This is just an alternative for people to potentially use (as well as offer other features people can find useful regardless of how they find what to watch).
All this to say, I'm not trying to "make you a customer", but hopefully I explained the idea better and you see what I'm going for? 😅
Just like you said... Sharing leads to better finding. But that's more about the "how" and less "what" no? As a user I'm more interested in help finding stuff. "Get custom recs by your peers" seems like the real value prop to me 🤔
Hey, thanks for the feedback!
I didn’t intend for phone numbers to be shared but I theory users would be able to. My intention is to create more of a platform for people to talk and share things to watch based on communities they join and why they’re friends like/recommend. Might need to revisit my description of the planned features
And yeah, ideally I would update it to include mocks of the app but I don’t have designs for that yet 😅. I agree that would be most beneficial though ha
And haha, I’ve actually tried to shorten a lot of the copy I have. But thanks, I’ll give it another look and see what I can adjust further
Still, thanks for checking it out! I really appreciate the feedback

Thanks, Alex! Being lean so far as really been paying off so I'm glad I'm doing things this way for sure ha
I'm also not a huge fan of the unDraw illustrations (only because they're used a lot, not because I think they're bad), so eventually I would like to replace them with illustrations I've made/commissioned to 1) be different from competition and 2) add a bit more branding style to things (who wouldn't appreciate some cute otter illustrations?).
I've actually gone back and forth with using "Sharing" vs "Finding", even in this mock that I've sent people. It definitely sounds like I need to tweak things more for sure. I personally believe that sharing and finding aren't totally unrelated (at least that's my premise with this project) but it's a bit hard to put that into good copy ha. Thanks for the feedback though! Would love to ping you when I find a good solution for the copy to get your thoughts
