If you're building a startup website, SaaS product, landing page, or MVP, choosing the right design tool can have a bigger impact on your workflow than you might expect.
For years, Figma and Adobe XD were two of the most common choices for UI/UX and web design.
But the question has changed.
Instead of simply asking "Which tool has better features?", founders and developers should ask:
Which design tool makes it easier to go from idea → prototype → developer handoff → working website?
I've been looking at this from a practical web-development perspective, and there are several things worth considering.
For startup teams, designers, developers, marketers, and founders often need to work on the same project.
Figma's browser-based workflow and real-time collaboration make it particularly convenient when multiple people need to review or modify a design.
That's especially useful for remote teams where sending updated design files back and forth can quickly become frustrating.
A beautiful design isn't enough.
Eventually, someone has to turn that design into a working website.
The easier it is for developers to understand layouts, typography, spacing, colors, components, and responsive behavior, the less time gets wasted on clarification and revisions.
This is one reason I think founders should evaluate design tools based on the entire design-to-development workflow, not just the design interface.
A startup website isn't viewed only on a desktop.
You need to consider:
Desktop
Laptop
Tablet
Mobile
Different screen widths
Different content lengths
Figma provides tools such as Auto Layout that can help designers think about responsive behavior earlier in the process.
That can make the transition from design to front-end development smoother.
Adobe XD was a strong choice for UI design and prototyping, particularly for designers already working within the Adobe ecosystem.
However, Adobe currently lists XD as being in maintenance mode, with no ongoing feature development.
That changes the decision for anyone starting a new long-term web design workflow in 2026.
If you're already managing legacy XD projects, the situation is different. But if you're starting from scratch, it's worth considering the long-term direction of the tool before investing heavily in a new workflow.
My practical take
For a new website or startup product in 2026, I'd lean toward Figma.
Not because every feature is automatically better, but because collaboration, prototyping, responsive design workflows, and developer handoff are important parts of modern product development.
And there's another important lesson here:
Don't choose a design tool in isolation. Choose the workflow that gets you from idea to production with the least friction.
A design file is only the beginning.
The real goal is a fast, responsive, accessible, production-ready website.
I put together a more detailed comparison covering Figma vs Adobe XD, their advantages and limitations, responsive web design, and how both approaches can move into HTML development:

I'm curious what other Indie Hackers are using:
If you were starting a new website or SaaS product today, would you choose Figma, another design tool, or skip dedicated design tools altogether? And why?
