Figma vs FigJam: I was surprised how many people use the wrong tool for the job

I've noticed a pattern while working with designers and developers.

Many teams open FigJam when they actually need Figma, and others start designing interfaces in Figma when they should have begun in FigJam.

After seeing this repeatedly, here's the simplest way I've found to explain the difference:

Use FigJam when you want to:

Brainstorm ideas
Create user flows
Plan customer journeys
Run design workshops
Collaborate with your team using sticky notes and diagrams
Use Figma when you want to:
Design UI screens
Create prototypes
Build design systems
Prepare assets for developers
Deliver production-ready designs

One interesting thing I've seen is that teams that spend just 20–30 minutes planning their project in FigJam often avoid hours of design revisions later.

For agencies and startups, that small workflow change can save a surprising amount of time.

I recently put together a more detailed comparison with screenshots, practical examples, and recommendations for different project types.
