Finally hit $500 MRR with my Mac AI writing app (in 4 months)

I finally did it after 3+ years of struggling!

Some of you might have seen me here. I built a lot of software tools, some of which include,

  • Search engine for developers
  • Browser tab manager
  • AWS cloud savings tool
  • Google Sheets to website
  • SEO content generator using GPT-3
  • Well-being assistant using GPT-3
  • All-in-one website analytics tool

A few more that I have even forgotten. Most of the products did not make any money, mainly because I did not do the right marketing it deserved. That's expected from an independent developer. Then GPT-3 came, and I got hooked on it.

GPT-3

I started using GPT-3 in 2021 and was thrilled by its potential. I built a few GPT-3 related tools. I saw a huge potential but realized that most people are unaware of it. It could be used for many of our mundane tasks. I decided to build a tool to help busy professionals take advantage of GPT-3. I did not do a lot of validation but decided to start lean.

I built a native app for Mac called Elephas to integrate into their daily tasks.

First version

I think I got lucky. I posted my first version on HackerNews and got a few paid customers. I always put a cost to my product, which helps me with the validation. The initial website looked bad. I still managed to get some paid customers and valuable feedback.

Mentor

Considering I have failed multiple times, I hired a mentor, Ayush, through Twitter, who helped me with decisions. It is good to have someone you can talk to who understands product development and strategies.

Tools and product decisions

I set up MixPanel analytics to understand usage analytics (anonymous metrics without any sensitive data). I reviewed the major features our initial users used and adjusted the landing page to reflect them. This resulted in better conversions.

I use Gumroad to manage subscriptions, and it comes in really handy as they offer native email workflows.

I realized a lot of my users did not understand the full potential of the tool. I set up a knowledge base tool and organized all the features in an easy-to-navigate structure. Support requests dropped.

Revenue path

Jun 17 - First paid customer

Sep 1 - $200 MRR

Sep 29 - $300 MRR

Oct 12 - $400 MRR

Oct 18 - $500 MRR

Testimonials

I attribute the recent increase in sales to the positive testimonials the tool has received. In the past, I have failed to work closely with end users, and this time I rectified that.

Challenges

As an independent creator, I have to assume multiple roles (like many of us here),

  1. Software developer
  2. Content writer
  3. Marketer
  4. Support person

But I don't just do them because I have to - I actually love doing them!

Distribution

I realized building is only a part of it. The Internet is filled with so many tools, and attention is the new currency. I focused on writing on different platforms, which gave me the initial push.

Elephas got covered in 2-3 newsletters so far, which has given some additional momentum.

500 MRR is not a lot, but it is a lot better than no revenue at all. I had $0 MRR for 3+ years.

Moving forward

I am looking for the right marketing strategy that will help me take this tool to a larger audience. Happy to receive any feedback.

Awesome stuff! Congratulations on hitting $500mrr. Best of luck growing further

  2. 3

Congrats Kamban! What tools would you recommend using for website creating and for customer communication ? I'm looking for something low-cost that can get me up and running rather quickly

    1. 2

I used simple HTML but used landing folio.com. Crisp.chat for website communication. Otherwise normal emails.

  3. 3

Congratulations on the milestone. I'm amazed at how many things you tried before it started working 💪🏾

And another shout out to your mentor @ayushchat (his twitter is also 🔥) -- people with good help and advice are rare.

This is the indie hacker story that we're all here to read -- perseverance, figuring out what works, then succeeding. Overnight success, years in the making.

Thank you, Victor! I believe that with a good support system in place, anyone can navigate their way through challenges.

    2. 2

Cheers Victor, thanks for the shoutout. So glad I can play a tiny role in Kamban's success..

  4. 3

Thanks for sharing your path and good luck with Elephas and all your projects :)

  5. 3

Awesome achievement Kamban! Congrats! Well deserved! I hope you can keep growing it steadily :)

  6. 3

Congratulations! It is a solid milestone 👌

    A few questions:

    1. What are you struggling with, right now?
    2. Do you work full-time on the project?
    3. Have you abandoned your previous projects? Or they are still alive?
    1. 3

      Hey Dmytro,

Thank you. Finding a scalable marketing routine is my current challenge. I have a few items in my mind and need to plan them out.

I am not full-time so far but will start fill time in 2 weeks. Saying goodbye to my 9-to-5 job.

Most of my previous which did not have users have been abandoned. I still maintain FlatGA, even though it does not make any revenue but has some lifetime users.

      1. 1

Thanks for sharing! It looks like that most indie makers are in the same boat.

  7. 2

This is a story of courage. It is an example of courage. It is a story of courage in the midst of failure, courage in the midst of adversities, courage in the midst of challenges. As you march forwards, I wish you nothing but more courage on your application road to 1,000$ MRR.

  10. 2

Thanks for your feedback on your app. Congratulations for not giving up after 3 years. I wish you all the best for the future of your application road to 1000$ MRR 🔥🔥

  16. 1

    Congratulations!
The landing page looks sick, very slick design

  17. 1

    Very neat app and write-up!

The mentor section piqued my curiosity -- are you able to share more details on what that engagement looked like?

Also, how did you find Ayush? and how do you believe that interaction helped you?

  18. 1

This is ace. Congratulations. Been following your journey on Twitter for a while now

  19. 1

Congrats! This is a fantastic achievement 🚀. Wondering which marketing/distribution methods you consider the most successful for you?
