Finding a niche in a completely new country

I just moved from France to Australia and I feels that there are so many opportunities for monetizing a side-project here: the country is pretty far from everywhere else, tourism and real-estate are booming as well as social networks and healthy lifestyle... I really want to find a niche and start building it piece by piece.

However I also know that I will never know the market better than locals.

As I just arrived, what would be my best stratey ? Import an oversea startup idea and adapt it here? Get to know the market and people better instead of rushing into something?
