Hey all! I'm in dire need for some creative growth ideas. I think I've got my personas and niches down pretty well. Except for one critical parameter: "where do I find these guys".
It's people that would like to be in touch with their family & friends more but for some reason just never quite get to it, life just gets in the way.
While I could focus on a broader niche that contains this one I would rather focus 100% on the right people.
Any ideas are welcome!
Other comments already mentioned the issue with the problem not being critical enough. I would like to dive into this a bit more, with a twist.
In my book, I recommend looking for a validated niche audience before building or even "solving a problem." You question of "where to find those people" indicates that this one is a particular hard audience to pin down. The audience you're looking for is "people who would rather spend money on a tool that reminds them to call their family than mustering the attention to do it themselves"—this sounds like a super hard sell. It might even be a contradiction in itself. "Life gets in the way" is not divine intervention, is a prioritization problem.
But not all is lost. I think you're actually looking at an interesting audience exploration opportunity here. Instead of wanting to build a thing that reminds people to "get in touch", I would flip this whole idea around and look for people who have actual problems "staying in touch" with their family. I know this might sound similar, but I want to point out the nuance. People who already were in touch with loved ones but for some reason get cut off are much more likely to have "getting in touch" as a critical problem. They might already have spent money on phone calls on in-place visits before, so paying for something that facilitates getting in touch is a much stringer "yes" for them. So who are those people? Families that were torn apart by the COVID-19 lockdowns? People who had to move to a different city for their job? People who got caught up in the justice system? Older people who had to move to retirement homes far away?
The twist is that these people all share the same problem, but they will experience it differently and they will need specific solutions that fit their circumstances. By diving into any niche audience like this and listening to their actual wants and needs, you will find a more critical problem, and knowing what they expect, you can build a solution that fits their needs.
Please understand that this solution might by no means contain a reminder-based approach. Maybe you will need to build some digital infrastructure, a marketplace, or some sort of network platform. That's the thing about going audience-first: you only get to have your idea AFTER you've researched the niche, AFTER you have collected information on their problems and how they solve them right now.
I call this the Audience->CriticalProblem->Solution->Product approach. Every step along the way, you get to validate. If the audience isn't willing to pay for anything, what good would it do to build something that then would go unsold. And even with an audience that would pay for their problems to be solved, what good would it do if the solution wasn't feasibly due to government restrictions (thinking about incarcerated people here, for example). Once you have a well-defined and existing audience, once you really know that there are many thousands of people out there who share a problem, THEN you can find out how to help them.
In closing, I want to express that I really like why you want to find those people. I know that human connection is the core of our lives, and you wanting to help with that brings a smile to my face. But trying to sell a product that doesn't solve a validated problem to an audience that might or might not exist is very risky. Finding a validated audience you want to empower, detecting their most critical problem, solving it without interrupting existing workflows and finally creating a product that works in the medium they expect to use it — this will increase your chances significantly.
Excellent views!!
@arvidkahl this is amazing feedback, thank you so much for taking the time to write this out, it all resonates. And I will comment more at length soon! Just have to jump off right now.
I didn't really elaborate on my product as I want to have the audience & problem locked down first. But it would be more of a social network / audio based platform, not at all just reminders. (very early efforts here: https://friendsandfamily-tune.kickoffpages.com/)
This sounds like a bad problem to focus on, you can't even know of it real. Cause it's social niceties, yes I should be a better person, yes I will do the right thing but when you give me 2 options even with helping the right one be easier, there is no indication you'd change the choice of actions.
By the same point, you won't get these people search how to solve their problem cause it's a problem of choice...
The thing the works for these niches is pain based ads, but I don't think it's going to be easy to make it viable...
These are some great points.
@kilghard Have you thought about a pivot, of this problem - connecting with your parents (or family, or friends?) in a more enjoyable and meaningful way?
It could be the same app and functionality but I'd imagine it would be easier to sell. You'd be targetting people who have a group chat on any social site
I know that's no longer a niche but finding it difficult to imagine using your idea
"discover the best bits in town"
5 sec audio from the best up and coming artists
(Just inspired)
going in that direction too (: https://highlights-tune.kickoffpages.com/ though I started with podcasters.
But yea I really have to figure out what niche to start out with ... it's too much currently.
Capture the low attention crowds with a new podcast format
Capture milenials with your audio content
Short format audio subs / publishing
Share yourself with quick audio clips
You on short audio
Micro podcasting
Some ideas for better titles
Think shorter more condence yet impactfull, emotional if possible
I love the "micro podcasting" idea. I'm going to steal it (:
Its short, snappy & most people will understand it instantly.
Hm that's a good point, though I feel that's moving away from solving a problem? Which is what people usually recommend me to do. I'm guessing this would be more of an incremental/different approach to the same problem? "Connecting with friends & family)
Very good points, thank you for that feedback. It is one of the niches I'm exploring. And while you're right that it is maybe not a high priority pain I'm convinced (though not tested yet) that a lot of people would like to stay in the loop & communicate more often. But it's currently just a huge hassle to stay up to date with everyone or tell everyone the same stories over and over.
Text takes way too long, images never tell the whole story, and you usually have to look at your phone to get updates. So I think there's a problem to solve but I need to maybe frame it better.
Had I wanted to do this with existing options, I'd do an audio recording in WhatsApp and fwd that audio to a few group or just create one group o care about.
It would be super easy and non painful and I don't need another thing for it.
Well (this is my personal experience) I have a family group & a friends group & some occasional solo friends. Voice is also just poorly supported, no way to give it a title or tags or structure it. It's also not the default so it feels a bit strange to throw it on people. The format is also limited to a few minutes (I think 2?). And you can't post anything public for people to follow. Once youve posted more than 3 messages its hard to remember what they were all about or to quickly go through them.
All this to say it's not at all the core of the product. TUNE is audio first, everything else second.
A lot of startups or ideas are technically "doable" with other platforms. But that doesn't mean there can't be a better / dedicated / easier way?
You just need to describe a thing that's currently hard (relatively speaking)
You have a point into the missing meta info
Due these tend to be a fwd only platforms and topics
Maybe you should be the "micro podcasting"?
Is this a critical problem you are solving?
Do people spend money on getting into contact with their friends/family?
What more can you do than Facebook and WhatsApp?
My point: this is definitely a problem for people. But this is not something people will pay for to get it fixed.
My 2 cents.
Thank you they are good notes.
TikTok is a different league :)
The problem is not that people need a better app. They need to stop using a shit load of apps so they have time to send a simple message to a family member :)
Time to start running FB ads "STOP USING THIS APP, SEND A MSG TO YOUR MOM" #tune
😂😂😂
TikTok deals with entertainment and social. It created a new curation of things that are cool and energetic and new interaction between people. But its first of all entertainment. And it drew on a crowd that was often not focused on of younger people. And also in a local that doesn't often get the innovation first and focused on things that are more social norm there...
Oh yes they did a lot of great things! But I would hesitate to call it a "critical problem" for those people that's all I'm saying.
Ask parents how much of a problem it is when their kids are bored...
There is also that value*people.
Entertainment is low value but huge quantity.
Even sports...
But also how games, tv, movies ..
