Finding quality designers for UX

I've created a football sim game engine that needs UX and I have attempted to use upwork and hired 3 different people all given the same tasks with same instructions with sample to give inspiration and after all 3 of them thought football was soccer, and all 3 of them produced mediocre results even though they had high ratings.

I would prefer to bring in a UX partner ideally where we could trade work instead of dollars, like I produce development work for his idea, and he produces some UX for mine, or possibly work together on each and become partners for future ideas.

I've tried a couple of sites but haven't been able to find quality UX talent.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Have you considered http://reddit.com/r/forhire? There is some quality talent there.

You can spot a quality designer by the way he tells you about the work. A junior designer can make your game look pretty and will convince you to hire them with a pretty gallery of photos or screenshots.

A good designer will ask questions first to learn your goals and work backward to identify the problem keeping the goal out of reach. They'll talk about how their solutions solved similar problems to yours, and they'll be genuinely interested.

You are going to run into a roadblock if you offer $0 though. The first gig with a new client sets the tone and trust for the whole relationship. Offering $0 says to me that this person doesn't even trust their own idea is worth spending money on. If you're a capable developer why not do a single freelance project and earn your startup cost.

Perhaps if you looked for a designer that needed a programmer you could offer to take the first risk in your barterig idea.

Like with development work, you generally get what you pay for. You can get decent results on Upwork, but you have to be VERY specific about exactly what you expect and what the deliverables are. Sites like https://crew.co/ vet their talent a little more, so will likely be higher quality than Upwork.

I really hope someone creates a product that helps people with similar skillsets team up. I've seen a couple come and go. https://www.dovetailx.com/ seems interesting, but isn't much more than a landing page right now.

Establishing trust is the big challenge with bringing on a partner or someone to trade work. When trading work with someone you've never met, there is no way of knowing upfront whether it will be worthwhile.

If you send me a little more information, I'm happy to take a look.

The code is in a private github repo and it's about 75% complete, but all of the remaining 25% isn't needed to get the website up and running. Also, I refer to the code as an engine because that's how I think about it, but it's not so well written that it's reusable by others, and would technically just be considered the simulation logic that I've labeled an engine. Are you a designer, and if so do you have a portfolio?
