I was thinking today what would be my first step if I had to start a business again from scratch.
And while money always plays a role (gotta get that paper) I think something that frequently gets overlooked who is you want to deal with over the next XX years of your life.
What I mean is who is the person that you want to devote your time helping over the life of your business?
Who is the person that you'll love to talk to again and again and again?
Who is the person that you'll think about and feel genuine excitement because you're making their life better?
That's when I realized that if I were to start from scratch again, I wouldn't go around looking for problems to solve, I would be looking for the person that I want to help because if I can focus on that person and put my energy into improving their lives then I'll eventually find the right problem to solve.
It means that I don't mind spending some time getting to know them. Living in their online communities to really understand their aspirations and pains. Seeing where their current solutions are falling flat.
The more I would get to talk to them the more they would get to know me. The more I could be seen as a guide to them and when I finally present them with a solution, then at the very least they're more willing to listen.
So if you're going to try and do this indie hacking thing, figure out WHO you want to interact with over the next 5 years because if you can fall in love with helping that person, everything else becomes a whole lot easier.
This is a really great point. Another way I look at it is what community of professionals do you want to be a thought leader for.
