First Freelance Gig - How much should I charge??

Hello fellow Hackers,

I recently scored my first freelancing gig with a home renovation business in my area.

He was getting potential customers asking if he had a website to then never hear from them again.

I'm in my last semester of my Web Development program and haven't been able to get sufficient guidance on this from profs.

Here's a few factors to take into account for context:
Start Date: December 30th
Approx End Date: January 8th

Mind you I really put in my hours as it was my Christmas Break, though didn't keep count as time was often wasted due to learning and newbie problems

The Contact page is fully functional and sends the data to his email using Basin (http://www.usebasin.com)

  • I am going to be setting up his domain & hosting via S3 Bucket to save him from unnecessary cost and maintain it for roughly 6 months.

I'm also providing him with Business Cards from Vistaprint which I designed,

Just to note The Images are currently just placeholders as he has yet to provide his own

any input/Guidance or further questions are appreciated,

How many hours did you spend building it?

  2. 1

You’ve already built the site without charging anything for it?

Yes, the files are still in my hands though, hes just waiting for a price, he also doesn't know what to charge and wants a fair deal on both ends.

No worries. Only you can come up with a fair price:

How much your value your time X how long it took to build + whatever admin costs are associated with it = your answer

Unless you are really just trying to build up a portfolio, I'd highly recommend figuring out a price and getting a deposit before you build a site for a client again. You'll have no recourse should they choose not to pay or bury you in revision hell if you don't. This is a lesson best not learned the hard way (I learned it the hard way years ago...no fun!).
