First internet $1 - A world map of indie makers 🌍

Hello, I started First internet $1 - a world map to discover and connect - through Twitter - with indie makers on the starting phase.

https://firstinternetdollar.com/

What is it and why

I’ve dreamed for a few years about creating some side project which would generate even my first $1, but never pursued it actively.

I think surrounding yourself with a circle of similar-minded people could make a difference. It can bring motivation, peer support and positive pressure to get s**t done towards your goal.

I thought of a globe map to discover and connect with others with similar motivation who are on the same starting phase.

At the least, it could lead to making some new interesting contacts on Twitter. In best case, it could lead to making contacts around the same location, start some peer groups or common projects.

How it works

→ Browse freely the globe, see peers and connect on Twitter with profiles you find interesting.

→ Would like to appear on the globe? Let me know (ping me here or on Twitter) and I’ll add you to the map. I’d like to make the sign up process itself part of connecting with others.

https://firstinternetdollar.com/

If you have any other ideas or feedback, let me know! Happy to chat otherwise 😊 Thanks!

    Congratulations.
Will there be filters in the future? Maybe filtering the map by industry, revenue or location?

    1. 2

Thank you John! 😊 Yeah, that might make sense - when the map would contain a bigger amount of users, filters would probably be valuable.

  2. 3

You know, you should charge $1 for each user to be on the map.

    1. 2

That's what I thought was implied, and I agree it should be!

      1. 2

Haha yeah, I considered in the beginning but then left it out just to keep it simpler!

  3. 3

It looks GREAT. Love the style, maybe slightly biased because I worked on stargazing apps at the start of my career :)

Are you charging $1 to be listed? Because if not, maybe you should be to stay on theme?
I'll DM you to get listed!

    1. 2

      Thanks a lot Le-Roy!

Funny when I first brainstormed by myself some initial ideas about this I thought to try making some type of commitment-centered app around the goal "build a tiny profitable internet product".

Kind of - pledge X money to commit to the goal - if you don't achieve it you lose your money. Similar as Pieter Levels did with his project https://gofuckingdoit.com.

But then I ditched this since I thought this type of commitment requires shorter time goals - I thought it doesn't really work to pledge money for a goal to be achieved over a whole year, too long time. After that I set on the simpler idea of just making a globe of starting indie makers - to find peers on the tiny $1 goal .

      1. 2

Ah I see, I just meant more of a one-time fee of $1 just to segment your user-base a little bit AND net you YOUR first internet dollar.

But it might not be worth the hassle as after all the fees you'll probably end up with only 30 cents or something.

        1. 1

Ah, yes, I see what you mean! :) I didn't want to overcomplicate it, and also wasn't sure that as a project it would be providing much value to pay for (self-doubt anyone?) so I kept it simpler after all and ditched the payment idea.

  4. 2

Cool website! I also think you could ask 1$ to be on the map (I thought this was the case at first). After all, people have created slack/discords with a much bigger entry fee (I believe @levelsio talked about that in one of the IH podcasts)

An alternative monetization strategy would be to ask companies that target aspiring indiehackers to chip in (probably more than 1$...) to also have a pin on the map.

I also DMd you on twitter :)

    1. 1

Cheers Gaël! Yeah, that title was confusing so many people, who were already ready to pay 😅

  5. 2

Not only I like the idea but the UI is pretty stunning 👌

    1. 2

Thank you Juan, I appreciate that a lot 🙏

  6. 2

Really nice project, so clean and simple. Can't upvote yet but I will.

I was also wondering if you are planing on monetising :)

    1. 1

Thanks again Martin! Also for being among the initial signed users 😀

I had some random thoughts around monetisation but put them aside for now, to focus on making a visually nice and simple project! I'm really excited with the amount of reactions so far!

      1. 1

Thank you for adding me! If you would need to consult or discuss let me know!

  7. 1

Thank you once again! Really simple & such a cool project!

I can only imagine what others have been through in the hands of these fraudulent individuals pretending to be cryptocurrency traders & miners. I just had a lifetime experience with them after meeting someone who claims to be an account manager and could help me make huge returns from my investments. I invested a lot of money with them and when it was time to withdraw my profits, they logged me out of my account and told me to put more money into their account. It was already too late before I realize they were swindlers, I had already lost $383,000 worth of Bitcoin to their fraudulent platform. I was depressed and embarrassed, but I started looking for ways to recover my stolen money and I came across an article about a company Cyberwall Fire which has helped thousands of people recover their money from fraudulent transactions, I don’t know how they did it but Cyberwall fire was able to recover my money in 72 hours. Cyberwall Fire is a reputable company and you can contact them with the following information:
    Cyberwallfire@techie(.)com
    Whats App:+12137236292

Cool! I can see this being useful for connecting or networking with like minded people in my city or while travelling. I DM'd you as well :)

    1. 1

      Yess, cheers Ian! 🙏

  10. 1

Your idea is very cool but you need to find a way to automate things. There are a lot of people who replied that they want to be listed and for 2 days nothing updated on your map.

    1. 1

That is true Vlad, but also - good to do things that don't scale first, before investing effort in advance!

  11. 1

Looks nice! I would love to be on the map as well!

Thanks a lot RJ! I really appreciate the design praise 🙇‍♂️

  14. 1

This is so awesome - congrats on such a beautiful product!

  15. 1

This is really cool. Good job!

  16. 1

This is an interesting idea! It's really great to see initiatives like this that bring together people with similar goals and ambitions. I'm sure it can be beneficial to many individuals who are just starting out in the world of online business.

The idea of having a map that allows you to browse and connect with other profiles is really cool and could be a great way to make connections and get inspired. It's also great that you give the option to sign up to appear on the map, as this could really help people to participate and get involved.

Do you have any plans for expanding this project or introducing new features? It would be interesting to hear about any upcoming developments!

    1. 1

Thanks a lot Viktor! As next steps I want to make it possible to self sign-up and maybe somewhat easier to discover users by country or similar. Feel free to follow on Twitter to hear new updates!

  17. 1

Omg, that's so cool idea. Simple, beautiful and so catchy, I am impressed 😲

    1. 1

Thank you so much Kacper! 🙇‍♂️

  18. 1

This is really cool. I love the interaction on the map. I wish you added the businesses of indie makers on there too. You could absolutely charge an amount for that.

    1. 1

Thanks a lot Mudiaga! Keeping this in mind :D

  19. 1

That is awesome! The idea is so amazing and it is very good. I will definietly recommend this. It is a wow! this is the first time I am amaze about something! two thums up!

  21. 1

This looks and feels very catchy. Honestly I wasn't much interested from reading the title but wanted to check out the app and immediately had to interact with it.

Great job on that part! 🎉

Happy to put Munich on the map.

    2. 1

Thanks a lot Leo! 😊 I will add you to the map and let you know - profiles are semi hardcoded still 😅

  25. 1

Looks very interesting, keep up the work

  26. 1

I love the project, and find really interesting projects that try to ease the pain/job of finding partners and collaborators. Until know the best platform that I´ve found is https://www.startupschool.org/cofounder-matching
Where are you on the map?

    1. 1

Thank you! I'm in Helsinki, Finland - but the app doesn't properly handle yet multiple profiles on the same location, so there's two of us crammed together 😅 I need to solve this as one of the next steps!

  27. 1

This is amazing! Sign me up :)

    1. 2

Thanks a lot Victor! 😊 I will add you soon! 🙌

  28. 1

    The UI looks amazing!

    1. 2

Cheers, thanks again Niklas! 😊 Pending to add you!

  29. 1

Clean UI and great execution! Congrats, Hugo!

        Thanks! 🍻

        1. 1

Hey Cosmin, you are in the map now! 🙌 2nd profile in Zurich! A bit crammed for now until I solve correctly displaying multiple markers in a single location 😅
          https://firstinternetdollar.com/?selected=cosmincodes

          1. 1

Wow, thanks! 🙏 Would be nice to sign in with Twitter and change our current location when we travel 📍

            1. 1

That is true, thanks Cosmin! Possibly implementing that at some point™

  30. 1

would love to see myself there xD

    1. 1

Thanks again Filip! Pending to add you when I get to the inbox 😄 Will let you know!

  33. 1

Awesome project! I loved scanning through the bios to see where everyone is located and what their one-liner is :). I would def recommend instilling some monetization model. Even just $1! I think you could take inspiration from http://www.milliondollarhomepage.com/.

Excited to see where this project ends up!

    1. 2

Thanks a lot Allison! I need to give it a thought 😅 for now, I'm excited and overwhelmed just with the amount of reactions!

  34. 1

    That's amazing! Very original & clean 🔥

    1. 1

      Cheers Julian! Much appreciated!

  35. 1

Hey Hugo, This is COOL :)

  36. 1

Very nice idea and design ! :)

    1. 1

      Thank you Jinca! 😊

  37. 1

    This is smart.
    A few recommendations:

    • You could charge $1 (per month) to be listed (for future founder) as a symbolic commitment to their goal. Once they make their first dollard, they achieve founder status, and being listed is now free
    • You could open this "directory" up to founders who are already past the first $1 (which would make your map way MORE valuable for non-members) , but hide their handle in the listing for non-founders. I.e, everyone can see the twitter handle of all the want-to-be-founders, you can also see all the established founders on the map, but to get access to e.g. my contact info (I'm already established) you need to be logged in.
    • I'd make it free to the "have made over $1" founders, because they are the hard side of your marketplace . This means that some people on the map have a lot of experience and are attractive to the rest. For instance, I've sold about $15MM worth of products online so far (though I'm shutting that business down to focus on my startup ) and I'm just getting into software. It's not super interesting for me to pay x or even to join a community that is 100% want-to-be-founders. But I might join if there was at least one founder in Barcelona that's doing interesting things even at $1k MRR, because there's always a lot to learn.
    • I would allow founders (that have made over $1) to list their startup and link to it
    • I would also consider using other handles than just Twitter. Not everyone is on the birdsite. I'm on Mastodon, others might want to link their email or their IndieHackers profile.

With this model if you get to 1k people on the map you're now making a grand a month, etc.

    Sébastien

    1. 2

Thanks a lot Sébastien for the thoughtful comment! 🙏 I'll take the time to read carefully later today and let you know.

  38. 1

Wow! Amazing UI and superb idea. I love it

    1. 1

    1. 1

Thank you Boyang, awesome! 🙏 Will add you a bit later today and let you know! 😊

  41. 1

Good idea - I guess it brings more indie hackers together and helps grow better.

    1. 2

Thanks a lot! That's the purpose at least, let's see where it ends up 😀

  42. 1

Haha that a very cool idea.
I think a lot of us share this wish to make even just 1 buck from an online business.
Also I like how clean and simple it looks.

    1. 1

Thank you Danniz! I think connecting with like-minded peers will help a lot in the journey towards this goal! 😊

  43. 1

The design is awesome! I would recommend thinking about how to use automation to get started with it, so there would be thousands of indies on the map already without them having to do anything. Totally doable with Twitter api.

    1. 1

Thank you, Silver! I appreciate so much some people liking the design, as I'm putting conscious effort on it 😊

Very true! I need to plan the next steps to make it more streamlined. Let me know if you would like to be also listed 😀

  44. 1

Hey @hugocardenas I've just sent you a DM on Twitter. Amazing project and I'd love to be part of the platform to support what you are building.

    1. 1

Thanks a lot Nakkeeran! Will be adding you soon! 😊

  45. 1

Nice and simple design, love it! Would be curious to see what features you add next and how you evolve this platform/service.

    1. 1

Thank you Arjun! 🙏 I'm also curious myself 😅

  46. 1

Really like this, nice, clean and simple and can evolve in many different and very cool ways

    1. 1

Thank you Mark! Indeed, so many questions regarding where to take this :D

  47. 1

This is so cool. Nice work :D

    1. 1

Thank you Marko! Let me know if you want to be listed.

  48. 1

I love the clean design and simplicity of the execution. Great job!
