Following others' posts
Every now and then someone submits a post with a great question that I really really want to read the answers of. I usually come across them when there is no comments yet, or very few.
Now, if there was an option to follow individual posts, so that I can get notified for new comments, it would be really, really useful. I don't even need the immediate email. I'm more than fine with in-app notifications. I check IH more than I check my email anyway. 😄
Right now I'm saving them to Pocket and forget about most for days if not weeks. This makes it hard to get some more answers to my follow-up questions.
I'm not even sure if there is anyone else feel the same need, but I would really appreciate if this feature can be implemented.
It's on my list of things to do eventually.
Would you prefer to get an email with each new comment? Or have the newest comments bundled into your community digest, which gets sent at most once per day?
I rather have browser push notifications above all but I don't want to be a brat who asks for a lot of things at once.
A notification for each new comment is the best. Maybe make it an option to receive either immediate or digested emails?
I would prefer single notifications, but once these are dismissed (or archived in your mailbox) it's really hard to find the relevant post. Maybe dismisses notifications still could be available in a notification history page.
I think for a post follow maybe a self updating notification (with push implemented when you can get to it) that reads "... new comments" would work. Once you dismiss it the counter would reset to 0?
I use this style on a large forum and it really helps keep thread follow notifications tidy and accessible.
I second that! I often feel alike, and every time I see a great question, I start wondering whether the follow button means following the post or the author, because when I hover the author name, another follow button appears in the author popup.
