For Start-ups who hire Freelancers

It seems like the answer to this question would benefit us both :). That is something I am trying to figure out. Have you tried the common platforms (Upwork, fiver, freelancer, etc...). If so, what is the biggest hinderance you are facing? Is it competition? or do you feel as though you don't have a big enough presence.

In terms of the market research, me and my partner are looking to do something in the freelance industry. As a student who struggled with trying to find co-op opportunities, I know the benefits it poses to students and early stage professionals or even professionals (COVID made it even more possible, working on per project bases so you can balance school or other obligations, etc...), the question then becomes, how does it benefit clients? I think if you answer this question thoroughly, you would have an easier time landing clients in the beginning. What are clients looking for when hiring a freelancer? How do they scout freelancers, how do they filter out potential freelancers? etc...

I know one freelancer who started doing work for free until he had 3 solid projects (two of which were generating money for his clients). He then leveraged their references to create a portfolio on Upwork. Also, he started charging pretty low in the beginning, until he had enough references, a good rating and a stunning portfolio to start charging what he wanted.

In any case, I would try to contact a successful freelancer and try to get some pointers and if you cannot find one, try to make a post on reddit, Indihacker or any other platform and see how people respond.
