Forum/community software
I've been planning to launch a forum/chat space for my target industry but haven't settled on the software to power it. There are obvious options like Slack or Discourse but I wonder if anyone knows of some more alternatives that I haven't come across yet?
I appreciate any suggestions of other tools (hosted or not, doesn't matter) that you can send my way. Thanks!

Tribe.so is like quora. If they had a more sensible pricing model, I'd keep using it. If there was an open source version of tribe, that'd be awesome.
I like the look of Tribe but the pricing is stopping me from trying it out too.
Now Tribe has a forever free version -- point your custom domain and build your community without any restrictions on members or content.
Also, it's not just Q&A; you can create communities with any type of content (short updates, long-form articles, images, videos, polls, etc.).
Hey Preetish. I'd be interested in learning more. An important feature for me is SSO because I need to be able to let me users of my platform easily log into my community. I understand that's currently a paid feature in your 2nd tier, but I really think your team should reconsider that choice given how necessary SSO has become to so many organizations. You might be losing business at your 1st tier because people can't do without SSO. I think the same will happen if your free plan is also without SSO. Just my 2 cents. Anyway, your team has my email, so I do hope to hear from you soon :)
Did you ever started a forum? How did it go? I am thinking about this myself but I am a bit afraid of the moderation. Is it a good idea to start a forum for the community or does it give you a lot of work with forum moderation? Would be great to hear about your experience!
For anyone visiting this thread, I've also found circle.so which looks really good but costs $99/month. Anyone just at the beginning phase of a community, like me, will balk at that price.

You can try Slack for real-time conversations and our product (https://onebar.io) for the long term storage and forum-style discussions
vBulletin, XenForo, MyBB (free), Invision Power Board and there are many!
But my personal favourite is MyBB & Discourse as it seems to be light on the resources when compared to vB, IPB & others.
I worked with a company that used Answerbase.com
It was pretty good, but more like an old school forum or Quora than a Slack. You can white label it and do some custom styling, and they have an API if you ever want to export your data.
