I'm currently building a Saas after validating it recently using a demo i built under the domain i bought. The name of the SaaS was short and suitable and is currently No.7 on Google Search results with barely any SEO.
I found out however that another domain was available and would make people immediately relate the domain name with what the product does. However it has some more competition with some other unrelated business sharing similar keywords.
What should i do ? Move to the New Domain and work to start ranking better on SEO or stay on the existing one and have better chance to rank #1 earlier on.
Note: I'm literally a newbie in SEO so would love a perspective on positioning/ marketing effect on making either decision 🙂.
When I tried on my vest, it looked good; it almost fit, which is the most crucial factor for me. https://subwayliveiq.info/
You can switch to a new domain if you think the new name is more suitable and relatable, as the name also plays a significant role until you become a big brand like Google, Amazon, etc.
You may face some challenges initially, but it can lead to long-term success.
Thanks @buckyjames ! Will start early the work to make it work well
If the competition for the new domain isn't really competition (as you said, the businesses are unrelated), definitely go for it.
Thanks @JessLeBrun , Going for it !
With no offense, I think you are overthinking it.
Probably, Just needed some insights on what happens when you have to do a full rebrand of a product earlier on. Before having active customers.
I have similar experience with you. I am working on an open source wysiwyg markdown whiteboard (https://github.com/markboard-io/markboard) recently.
The original product name called "InnoDeck" (domain: https://innodeck.app, deprecated now). Then I found I need to switch to a more related name, I switched to "markboard" (domain: https://markboard.io), which is the combination of "markdown" and "whiteboard".
I am satisfied with the current name and suggest you to do so 🙂
Hey @shiqimei ! Glad you were satisfied with the change. I think the new name is also way more suitable.
Planning on doing so too 🙂
I will not take risk if my existing domain is getting a good amount of traffic.
Interesting, Its a new project started a month ago. Not getting traffic <10 visits.
Is is too early to jump to the new one ?
Jump... change the domain - dont hesitate... you have not even started. Make sure to use 301 redirect in webmaster tools.
Awesome. Think so too. It resonates more with people with the change. Will do so 🙂
