Founders and Early Teams Don’t Just Build Startups — They Survive Them (Why I Built therappai)

Hey IndieHackers đź‘‹

I’m James, founder of therappai — an AI video therapy platform designed to help founders and early-stage teams stay mentally healthy while building ambitious startups.

A few years ago, I co-founded Whip Around, a B2B SaaS that scaled from a small New Zealand startup to over $20 million ARR and a global team. It was the classic founder story — endless late nights, constant context-switching, and that quiet fear that if you stop for a moment, everything might fall apart.

We celebrated funding rounds and ARR milestones… but behind the scenes, the human cost was real.
Burnout. Anxiety. Team fatigue.

That experience changed how I think about startups entirely.

⚡ The Hidden Cost of Building Early

Early-stage teams are scrappy by design — everyone’s wearing five hats, running on adrenaline, caffeine, and Slack notifications. But when your startup becomes your identity, mental exhaustion feels like progress, until it catches up with you.

What I’ve learned:

The first version of burnout looks a lot like productivity.

Founders don’t just build companies — they absorb the stress of everyone in them.

The early team’s mental health is the startup’s real runway.

🌿 Why I Built therappai

I wanted to build something that could help founders and small teams navigate that pressure before it breaks them.
So we created therappai — the world’s first AI video therapist.

It offers:
🎥 Short, human-like AI therapy sessions you can open anytime
đź““ Mood tracking and journaling for early-stage reflection
🧭 CBT/DBT-based coping tools for stress, self-doubt, and burnout
🚨 “Crisis Buddy” alerts to flag when someone’s at risk

We’re launching early access and giving the first 100 people 3 months free → therappai.com/waitlist

đź’¬ A Note to Fellow Founders

If you’re leading an early-stage team, your mindset becomes everyone’s emotional barometer.
How you show up — focused, balanced, present — sets the tone for your company culture, even before your first 10 hires.

Startups aren’t just built with code and capital — they’re built with mental energy.
Protect it. Guard it. Build around it.

That’s what therappai is here to support.

TL;DR:
After scaling a $20 M SaaS and burning out, I’m now building therappai — an AI video therapy platform to help founders and early-stage teams stay mentally resilient.
Because no startup should succeed at the cost of the people building it.

As an early stage startup founder there's a lot of pressure and responsibilities my co-founder and I face everyday even though we currently are testing our app with beta users. I can only imagine the stress we will face together as we get more users and uncover issues in the startup.

The most common issue I get often is burn out, as I am currently the only technical person coding. It's been the same issue even as a solo app founder in the past. I think a lot of founders still neglect their mental health since they are so focused on everything else in their startup.
