Free Art Idea Validation
Hey All,
I have this hypothesis that artists create art because of their love for it. They would rather create art without any timelines, compulsion, monetary gains, etc.
Based on this theory, I am thinking of creating a platform where artists publish their creations and give them for free. People who like the creations can in turn pay a tip as per their budget allows.
Tip will be shared by the platform and the artist.
The basic premise of the platform is a tip based economy where every transaction is as per the monetary evaluation by the customer receiving service/product.
Why wouldn't this idea work?
I think you should go for it! It’s a great idea. You’re spot on about artists and why they create. That being said, here are two potential downsides:
There is too much noise out there and you get zero traction.
People/society tend to value things based on very strange reasoning. For example, original Banksy’s couldn’t get $60 per piece on the streets of NYC and yet his work fetches easily over a million at auction. Why is that?
It’s all about the brand and that brand conveying value. Perceived value is nearly everything, which is a tragedy when it comes to art.
Thanks for supporting the idea. I totally agree with you on perceived value. I want to help the artists by providing them tools for establishing a brand. One of the things I think that may increase the brand is the perception of hard labor behind an artwork. Maybe asking them to record their process of art creation can be one of the ways to convey hard work. What in your opinion, can also increase the perceived value? I probably may not go for social validation or FOMO kind of traps, but customers should truly get the artwork for their own perceived value.
@vickyteke I used to live in Charlottesville, Virginia and the community did quite a lot to support artists. One of things they did was to take an old school building and turn it into artist-in-residence studios where the artists had a place to work, showcase their work and engage with the public. It was a really cool idea that created a win/win, so your idea of documentation is along the right line of thought. 👍
