Free Claude Code Alternative: What Can You Use Instead of Claude Code?

Claude Code is one of the most popular AI coding agents right now, but the cost can be a problem if you only use AI coding occasionally.

For a student, hobby developer, beginner, or indie hacker working on a small side project, paying for another AI subscription just to experiment with coding agents can feel like a lot.

So what are the options if you want a free Claude Code alternative?

There are several approaches, but they usually come with one of three tradeoffs:

You bring your own API key and pay for model usage yourself.

You use a limited free tier.

Or you run models locally, which can require relatively powerful hardware.

I'm building Clixad around a different approach.

Clixad is a free cloud-based AI coding agent designed around a Claude Code-style terminal workflow. It can work through a codebase, read and modify files, execute commands, test changes and iterate on errors.

You don't need to provide your own API key, and there isn't a mandatory monthly subscription.

Instead, users receive free credits and can earn additional credits through advertiser-funded offers, forms and surveys. That revenue helps pay for the model inference running in the cloud.

The important distinction is that the AI itself isn't magically free. The inference still costs money. The goal is simply to avoid making the user pay those costs directly.

This also means Clixad isn't really designed to replace Claude Code for someone running an AI coding agent all day.

The underlying idea is pretty simple: if you only need an AI coding agent occasionally, maybe paying with a little time through advertiser-funded offers makes more sense than paying a monthly subscription.
