Free plan or not free plan, and growth

Hi guys.

I recently added a free plan to my blogging platform thinking that it might somehow help acquire more users, both with word of mouth and because for free users there's a "powered by" link in the footer.

However some people seem to think that it's not worth it, that free users are the most difficult and expensive in terms of support etc, and that they rarely convert.

So I am wondering if it's a good idea to keep a free plan, or if I should remove it. The problem is also that the free plan allows basically all the features apart from custom domains and collaboration, so I am worried that most people wouldn't feel the need to convert to paid.

What is a good balance with features so that the free plan is good to get started with, but with higher likelihood of people converting?

What is your take in general on a free plan? Is it worth it?
