I'm 20 years old, and fortunate enough to have parents who let me skip college and live with them while I teach myself to code and run a business. That said I am tired of being a drain on someone else's resources and want to become self sufficient as soon as possible. Long term I want to move beyond selling my time and actually own a business.
I've been freelancing for the past three years as a full-stack developer.(React, Express.js, CouchDB, etc.). More recently I have completed several embedded projects where I wrote code in Rust and Javascript to run on fleets of Raspberry Pis. I also manage a couple of Linux servers. I currently charge $30 to $40 per hour and have no shortage of work.
Currently I am also working on a product that helps farmers save water by monitoring soil moisture and only irrigating when needed. This is taking most of my time, so I only have a few hours a week available for freelancing. This ends up being very frustrating for my existing freelancing clients who love the work I do but want me to do more ambitious and time-consuming projects for them.
I am considering hiring freelancers and gradually transitioning my current workload over to them. Basically take some time from my irrigation project to start an agency, with the hope that it will give me more time in the long run. I have mixed feelings about this idea. On one hand I would hate to see all the trust I have built with my clients over the years go to waste. But I am afraid that the freelancers I hire will not be able to deliver high enough quality and I will just lose a bunch of money paying them and then doing the work myself anyway.
Any suggestions or alternative options which I may be missing would be appreciated. Thanks!
You should maybe increase your freelancing price ($80/h), and just focus on one client who is ready to pay you this amount.
Same total revenue, but you'll have more time on your side projects :)
Just an idea, but could work
I know a lot of cases that end up exactly like this. Also, even if they deliver... hiring freelancers adds a lot of communication and management overhead. Don't think it will free your schedule for other projects.
Is your product profitable? You could try rising your hourly rate, or just taking the pay cut and bill fewer hours... depending on how much you believe in this product and want to focus on it.
As someone also somewhat in the same position, I would be very wary of the agency route. I have used some junior developer to help me with the workload, but it definitely did not free up my time to work on my product ideas. I would agree that raising your rates is the best option, although your current clients will probably find it difficult to suddenly pay double.
On another note, I'm interested to hear about your irrigation project. I'm also into agtech and especially interested in the work of Indie Hackers in this space.
Thank you for your thoughts!
I really need to create an IH profile for my project, but in the mean time I'll reply to your email with more info.
Thank you all for your sage advice! Raising my rates should allow me to make more money without the overhead of managing freelancers.
