From a Simple Idea to a Launched AI Cooking App – What I Learned Building Yumzy

Hey everyone,
Just wanted to share a few lessons I’ve learned while building and launching my latest side project — and hopefully get your thoughts and advice too.
I’ve always loved the idea of using AI to make everyday tasks easier. Around six months ago, I started exploring a concept: What if cooking didn’t feel stressful, but enjoyable — even intuitive?
That thought sparked Yumzy — an AI-powered cooking assistant that helps you search, save, and even create recipes, with voice control and a clean, focused UI. You can talk to it while cooking, and it guides you step by step like a friendly sous-chef.
But beyond the app itself, here are a few things I learned in the process:
🧠 Start with real frustration — I personally struggled with recipe overload, cluttered sites, and no good way to organize my own recipes. That became my “why.”
💬 Talk to potential users early — Sharing rough mockups got me way better feedback than polished designs.
🛠️ Build lean, then polish — I focused first on core features (search, save, voice flow), then refined the UX with small iterations.
🌱 Don't overthink launch — Product Hunt was my MVP launch strategy. I kept it simple: clean visuals, clear copy, and a direct demo link.
If you're building something similar or are in early stages of a product — what’s worked best for you in terms of feedback loops or early traction?
