Hey IndieHackers! π
I wanted to share the story behind Toolbit.ai - an AI tools directory I've been quietly building. It's not a success story (yet), but rather a "building in public" moment where I'd love your feedback and thoughts.
Six months ago, I was drowning.
Not literally, but in AI tools. As someone constantly experimenting with new tech for my projects, I was spending 3-4 hours every week just researching AI tools.
The breaking point came when I spent an entire afternoon researching image editing AI tools, only to discover the "perfect" tool I found had been discontinued three months ago. The blog post reviewing it? Still ranking #1 on Google.
I realized I wasn't alone. In every Discord, Slack, and Reddit community I was part of, the same questions kept appearing:
"What's the best AI tool for [specific task]?"
"Has anyone actually used [tool name]?"
"Is [tool] worth the $20/month?"
We had hundreds of AI tools launching every month, but zero reliable way to discover the right one for our specific needs.
The existing solutions were broken:
AI tool directories: Massive, uncurated lists optimized for SEO
Review sites: Affiliate-driven content with fake testimonials
Social media: Great for discovering tools, terrible find all info and alternatives
Communities: Fragmented conversations, hard to search
Instead of building another massive directory, I started with what I wished existed: genuine, hands-on reviews of tools I was actually testing.
My recent post? Google's 'Nano Banana' guide - a deep dive into Gemini 2.5 Flash's image editing capabilities that took me 3 days to properly test and write.
No fancy features. No complex categorisation. Just one human actually using tools and sharing honest insights.
If you've made it this far, thank you! I'd love your thoughts:
What's your biggest pain point in discovering AI tools?
Would you find genuinely helpful AI tool recommendations/alternatives for specific tool?
Want more features? Drop me a DM - will add that feature if found really helpful.
Building in public is terrifying but exciting. Thanks for being part of the journey!
